The best engineers I talk to say the same thing...

"A 1x engineer with AI is a 0.1x engineer but a 10x engineer with AI is 100x engineer."

So I asked our engineers at @tenex_labs what is the biggest difference between a .1x and 100x engineer.

Here's what they said:

1) Thinking at a higher level of complexity, LLM handles the syntax so the new superpower is being able to hold a ton of “state” about the complexity of the entire system in your mind rather than the complexity of one file. You can rip codebase wide changes if you can hold the whole codebase in your mind at a higher level of abstraction.

2) Communication skills. the more precise you are at explaining your thoughts or explaining complicated technical ideas in english, the better you’ll be at getting the LLM to do exactly what you want. Engineers are now better off writing essays, not code.

3) Patience/long-term thinking, it’s worth spending 90% of time on planning/designing good architecture because of how much better the LLM will work with the codebase in the future. Once you have a good plan, it’s trivial for the LLM to execute, but it won’t be able to execute a bad plan without cascading errors and band-aids. The plan is everything, never ask Claude to just start writing code unless it’s a small change.

4) The biggest leverage is context control which comes from two places: knowing how to write good code (obv) AND knowing your codebase deeply and being able to lob in context to the llm. Ultimately, if you have great patterns in your codebase, an LLM can execute incredibly well.

5) Raw intelligence comes to the surface quicker, knowledge of tools depreciated in value, thinking in systems appreciated in value. Engineers are becoming architects. The better the engineer, the better it can navigate the context graph to get to the best solution - LLMs = amplifiers.

6) AI is an amplifier of strengths and weaknesses. So if you use AI and you have sloppy code, your code will be sloppier. If you're fast, you're faster. Any vector you can measure an eng on gets multiplied.
