It was not practical to do this kind of verification until very recently, with LLMs that can generate the proofs instead of humans hand-writing them. (The proofs don't even have to be readable by humans, they can be pure slop, as long as the smaller theorems are correct.)

The first real formally verified (end-to-end) cryptographic protocols appeared about last year, written by hand at great expensive, and were for relatively simple protocols.

Grayscale Chairman Defends Zcash

Grayscale Chairman Barry Silbert (@BarrySilbert) says critics are unfairly portraying the Zcash (@Zcash) vulnerability as a negative event.

Silbert praised developers for identifying and fixing the issue, arguing the episode demonstrates the strength of the network.

The comments come after Arthur Hayes (@CryptoHayes) sold his entire $ZEC position. ZEC is down roughly 30% in the wake of the controversy.

In 2016, the team led by @zooko created untrackable, unseizable, encrypted digital cash using Zero-Knowledge Proof technology.

The cryptography behind it was so advanced that Sergey Brin, Google, called it “mind-boggling.” Even today, 99% of humanity still doesn’t understand how it works. Yet now, almost every serious privacy-oriented project wants to implement ZK technology.

Zcash wouldn't exist without @zooko. He seeded the technical and cultural values of the project that have kept us vigilant in defense of its integrity.

Much of Zcash's recent success has been because Zooko plays a less central role in the project, and it has decentralized and grown to transcend him. I think he would agree! But he is still a major spiritual force of the project, and an ally that wants it to succeed.

Let's be mindful of the signal we send our next generation of risk takers, by how we treat his legacy. Zcash has a long road ahead of it, and no single one of us can carry it across the finish line.

We're all liable to end up in @zooko's shoes one day. You do not want to be on the receiving end of the poetic justice served for the things you said when you were once on the winning team.
