We can't just tell students to be kind. If kindness stems solely from a lack of choice or agency, it may not be as virtuous as when it's freely chosen. Genuine kindness arises from a place of autonomy and compassion rather than from a sense of obligation or powerlessness.

As schools plan for fall, you don’t need canned curriculum, new programs, or initiatives to be more effective. You do need teachers to feel respected, valued, supported & appreciated, as well as feel like their talents/strengths are being utilized. Morale & achievement will soar!

Assistant Commissioner Paul Katnik tells the State Board teacher recruitment and retention in Missouri remains a challenge. Salaries are a factor in addition to stress related to the pandemic. Missouri has the lowest minimum teacher salary compared to neighboring states.

If students aren't in school, then teachers should be able to teach from home. 42% of people work from home, yet teachers are expected to go to an empty school to teach? School districts, trust your professionals!

Sadly there may be higher attrition this year than normal. But epidemic or not, teachers rarely leave schools where they feel appreciated, supported, encouraged and treated professionally.

Imagine if superintendents hired great principals and then got out of their way and let them lead. And imagine principals hiring great teachers and then getting out of their way and let them teach. We need more professionalism in the profession. The Lee Iacocca way.

I think teacher evaluations right now should focus on the following questions:
How are you doing?
Are you taking care of yourself?
How is your family?
How can I best support you right now?

In 1975, 22% of college students majored in education, higher than any other major. By 2015, fewer than one in 10 students are pursuing education. & with a near 50% attrition every 5 years, we are need to do a better job of supporting, mentoring, appreciating, & paying teachers.

If a school culture doesn’t raise morale, increase productivity & effectiveness, and enhance retention of staff, then it is not a positive school culture.
