It is time to stop showing the clips. Of Charlie and of Iryna. These are snuff films, and repeated viewing will desensitize us to them. They will destroy our civilization, and I'm not kidding.
People hate on ChatGPT, but I rarely regret the time I spend in the app, and it’s worth reflecting on why.
The Internet used to be an active place. You went looking for things by typing things into search bars and clicking around. Now it’s become a passive experience where you sit back as a never-ending conveyor belt of information gets delivered to you.
It’s not what you want that gets delivered. It’s what keeps you engaged. The moral justification for this product design is that people stay engaged when they’re served what they want, but everybody knows that isn’t entirely true.
Thus, our curiosity no longer steers the ship. Algorithms do.
And the surest way to hold people’s attention is with nonsense that seems important in the moment but makes us regret the time we spent in retrospect.
What’s nice about ChatGPT is that it doesn’t throw anything at you. It offers nothing but a blank search bar and only gives you new information when you ask for it. It puts you back in the driver’s seat. Sure, it could be better and there will definitely be social consequences to LLMs, but it’s nice to use a piece of information software that doesn’t prey on the mind and isn’t optimized for total user seconds.
@matt_vanswol Not only do I play with my kid every damn day. I'm gonna play with him more to spite this article. And then I'll read him a book, his favorite right now is about a pout-pout fish spreading the dreary wearies all over the place, which is who I suspect is the author of this.
@Oceanbreeze473 Depends on your expenses, unlikely. With few responsibilities and some specific situations it's doable. Some cheap housing in a walkable area or little need to travel, low subscriptions, very few dependents, or somehow major expenses are being subsidized, nepotism or luck.
BREAKING: President Trump is threatening to install Microsoft Teams on President Xi’s laptop if the Chinese government doesn’t remove its 34% reciprocal tariff. More to come.
