RIP “Big Al” Emerson
Folks, today I lost an old friend, and poker lost a great guy, a jovial guy, an high/low split aficionado—Big Al invented “Archie” w qualifiers of a 9’s for a high, 8 or better for a low—and a lifelong lover of our game
Big Al was the first professional poker player that I befriended, way back in 1986. I met him in a $10-$20 Limit Hold’em Game at the Stardust Casino in Las Vegas. Al lived in LaCrosse, Wis, and I lived in Madison
The circuit
Al regaled me w tales about him traveling around “A poker circuit” in the Midwest: and boy was I in! Minneapolis had big mixed games (w “pony tail Tony”), North Dakota had Tom Day’s $300 buy in No Limit Hold’em poker tourneys (w Tom McCormick), LaCrosse had a $5-$10 limit Hold’em game at Freddy Wakines Bar, w “Bowser” and a warm crew, and Madison had a big no limit game $5-$5 that I didn’t even know about! From 1986 to 1994, Big Al and I traveled to all of those places together (and a lot more places like Reno, Chicago, and many more).
Al was always the life of the party! He gave plenty of action, and no one minded losing their money to him. When he walked in the whole room smiled! He could get a bit morose whilst losing too much, but he never showed it beyond being uncharacteristically quiet
Big Al made a living playing poker for 35 years before he found greener pastures when he began to book a bet or two. He played poker everyday for decades, and continued to play 2-3 times a week—the last 25 years in Phoenix—until the very end.
Big Al passed on his love of the game to his beloved daughter @MellyMel_120 who he forged a strong, loving and lasting relationship with. Love you Big Al, I’ll miss you my friend…
@SamGreenwoodRIO@Kevmath said the guy who Webster defines boring personality. good post make sure your backer doesn’t drop you from another losing season on the Triton tour.
@chamath must bet in round number 3275 is a real bet and if you can more than 5 pre to open fold fold to no action each can ask the deal to look. as the hand continues floor is call if snap must slash next hand one big blind. and what about booze and nicotine.

@llewisspencer you aren’t getting a seat in the bigger private games because of only one reason: other people offer a better playing experience. ex.. anti social, nit. you smell to name a few. happens is every industry not just poker. perfect example is uber vs cabs.
@NickJulia i hope you all make a final table. but if you do. i hope in honor of doyle you play props for the whole final table! that would be a true tribute.
you should add the disclaimer with the tweet of all my followers should block these two account. with responses like that they clearly aren’t smart enough to walk and chew gum let a lone give any kinda mean thought on any subject
This is what happens when you get to 14k followers.

@BenbaLamb Daniel’s story about Doyle & Ivey have a tee time tee with Daniel & Mike at 10am & they are still in the club house after 2pm b/c those two are still arguing over 1/2 a shot. Would loved to been a fly on the wall. would have been a masters class on how to negotiate.
Twelve years ago I swapped money in Europe for money in Vegas with Ivey.
Arriving at the WSOP I walked up to Ivey, who immediately asks 'Wait do I owe you? Hoiw much?'.
'$25k', I reply. Ivey looks around and sees Doyle driving by on his scooter. 'Doyle, do you have cash on you to give this kid?'.
Doyle: 'How much?'
Ivey: '$25k'.
Doyle: 'I don't carry spare change on me, stop wasting my damn time'.
"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, throughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming, wow, what a ride!."
@NickJulia so back the answer. if a dealer ten hands of tripple board flops. an hour. but a new deck was used for each flop it would 116 years for this to happen. 30,350,00 total flops or 1 10,175,0003 flops. so you must have witness something that should 3.5 life times to happen
@NickJulia 1/5525 for the next flop. and just thrip of any card on the next flop would be 1/425. so twice a day for a table that runs around the clock. twice in 5 minutes outside 3 standard distributions. 10,10,10 happen ever 9.2 days for a 24 table. so once a month to should expect
@PhilGalfond @henry_kilbane @golferjosh don’t know JA but would bet if rolls r reversed JA would have like the tweet or respond back positively showing he enjoyed it. it also seem similar to a post of beatify sunset from their balcony. i feel the only bullying in the thread are those attacking PG & JA
