Today, I had the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with representatives of civil society who are attending the 35th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice #CCPCJ35.
This year, more than 600 civil society participants representing 135 NGOs, from across the world, registered for the CCPCJ. This huge turnout reflects the growing interest and involvement of civil society in @UNODC’s work.
The role of civil society is vital. They bring unique perspectives and experiences that add value and support all programmes and activities that address crime prevention, strengthening criminal justice and multilateralism.
Grateful to @IanTennant9 and @CPCJ_A for organizing this dialogue and chairing an enriching exchange of views and perspectives.
@UNVolunteersng@UNODC_Nigeria I feel super proud to be featured here.
The work we do matters a lot despite the security challenges and limited resources.
Young people in the Northeast are changing the narrative in protecting children affected by conflict through our YPCs network across Borno Adamawa and Yobe
Young people have a critical role in protecting children from violence and conflict. I’m proud to keep doing this work, and to change how communities in the Northeast view conflict-affected children not as a threat, but as essential stakeholders in building peace.

I was honoured to receive the Country Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Nigeria, Mr Cheikh Touré, on a courtesy visit of mutual goodwill and constructive engagement.
Our discussions were anchored on the imperative of strengthening collaborative responses to the intersecting challenges of substance abuse, mental health conditions, and insecurity, with particular attention to the North-West region and other affected parts of the country. I reaffirmed Kaduna State’s steadfast commitment to a public health–centred and evidence-based approach, one that prioritises prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and social reintegration.
I conveyed the appreciation of the Government and people of Kaduna State to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his leadership and for fostering an enabling national environment that continues to support subnational reforms in peacebuilding, healthcare strengthening, and community security architecture. I also expressed gratitude to the UNODC for its consistent partnership, technical assistance, and global expertise.
UNODC Representative Touré commended Kaduna State for evolving as Nigeria’s benchmark for drug prevention and treatment, with one of the country’s most effective mental health laws. He noted that Kaduna is the first and only jurisdiction in Sub-Saharan Africa to implement the Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI) programme and the first in Nigeria to adopt the Child Amplified Protection System, while leading the 2025 Transparency and Integrity Index for the second consecutive year.
Kaduna State remains fully committed to deepening its partnership with the UNODC, including consideration of the proposed International Summit on Drug Abuse, Kaduna, as part of our collective resolve to advance a safer, healthier, and more inclusive society grounded in inclusive sustainable development across communities in Kaduna State.
