After 46 years without building a single primary aluminum smelter, the US is starting one in Inola, Oklahoma.
Century Aluminum and Emirates Global Aluminium plan to produce 750,000 tonnes per year, which would more than double current US output from four remaining plants that together make roughly 680,000 tonnes.
A smelter this size consumes about 11 TWh of electricity per year, comparable to a city the size of Nashville, because producing one tonne of primary aluminum requires around 14 MWh of continuous electrolysis.
In 1980 the country had 33 smelters producing 4.6 million tonnes.

🇭🇷Croatia is receiving the largest investment in the history of Central and Eastern Europe, the Pantheon Project worth 50 billion euros is underway.
An AI development and innovation center, known under the working name Project Pantheon, will be built in the area of Topusko in Sisak-Moslavina County, with a total installed capacity of one gigawatt.
The value of the infrastructure alone that will be built through this project and will remain with the state - from new power lines and substations to road and optical networks - is estimated at around 500 million euros, more than the Pelješac Bridge cost.
@Centrifuzija@PrstanSi Ma glede licenciranja niti ni take sile...

Grouping wind turbines and solar panels together is weird enough. But if you're gonna group wind turbines, solar panels, hydroelectric dams, and bioenergy power plants into one category called "renewables," you really should add nuclear and just call it "low-carbon."
The Netherlands plans to build two (1000 to 1650 MW) reactors by 2035. An analysis shows that, if the reactors are built in the provence of Zeeland, the region would receive a $5.4 billion economic boost. Article link in reply.
🇩🇪 Germany had it figured out in 1974
Then they changed their minds.
This chart is from the German Economics Ministry's own energy model... 52 years ago.
The plan was clear:
☢️ Nuclear takes over
🛢️ Oil peaks and fades
⚡ A clean, stable energy future
Germany was on track.
Then they shut it all down.
Pressured by politics.
The last German nuclear plant closed in 2023.
Now Germany is begging for cheap and reliable energy
The engineers in 1974 got the future exactly right.
The politicians in 2023 chose a different path.
And now ordinary Germans are paying the price.
One of the the most expensive energy mistake in modern history wasn't made by accident.
It was voted for.
Taiwan's Taipower is making plans to restart its Ma-anshan Nuclear Power Plant, which was politically forced to close last year. Article link in reply.
If the plan is approved, they will have to perform inspections, and then apply for a license to restart the plant. They say that the plant could restart operations as early as 2028.
Taipower is also expected to submit plans to reopen the Guosheng Nuclear Power Plant as well.
Could it be that Taiwan is reversing its nuclear phaseout policy?
