it’s a bit ridiculous to say “the time you spend scrolling could be spent building a business/writing a novel/reading the classics”. sometimes that’s true but usually scrolling happens as a result of cognitive fatigue, and the idea that you can just “swap in” another intellectually demanding task means you’re treating your body/mind as a machine
a better approach would be “the time you spend scrolling could be spent taking a stroll/napping/staring out the window/having a meandering conversation with a friend”. that’s both more palatable and probably what we’re actually craving when we reach for our phone: a brief break from the demands of life, and a time to let our mind relax

Today I can forgive anyone their frailties, but I find I cannot forgive myself my lack of endurance. I cannot forgive that I overcomplicate things that should be simple, I cannot forgive that I get discouraged easily, I cannot forgive that I prefer laughter to quiet.
a few years ago I was very lost in life. i had a few people close to me express concern over my lack of direction, with the gentle nudge that maybe I should just pick something and move forward... which was well-meaning, but looking back, I would have greatly benefitted from someone encouraging me to lean into my experience
to have someone let me know that such periods can be deeply formative, and that such inner tension can be a sign of something new struggling to emerge, a process that can't be rushed or resolved through force & impatience
really, what I'm talking about is someone giving me permission to be lost: to have their support as I fumbled around in the dark, and to feel their trust in me as I searched for Ariadne's thread
I don't blame anyone in my life for how they handled it: they were coming from a place of care & love, always. and what I'm describing is a tricky & nuanced position to hold, because not all periods of darkness are constructive
but if you're currently experiencing this sense of being adrift, I would like to at least offer the possibility that this is a natural process, like a bud trying to break through the soil, and it resolve in time. I can't know if this is true for you, but it was true for me, and the best thing I could have offered myself back then was patience & curiosity: not to rescue the burgeoning plant, but to watch it start to unfurl, little by little
Until now, if you lost or broke your phone, your Signal message history was *gone,* a real challenge for everyone whose most important conversations happen in Signal. So, with careful design and development, we’re rolling out opt-in secure backups.

Secure backups will let you save an archive of your Signal messages remotely in privacy-preserving form, refreshed every day.
Now available in the latest Android beta release, rolling out to iOS and Desktop in the near future.
Forget trying to be “1% better every day”
It might be well-intentioned, but the concept smuggles in false assumptions about how growth happens in a human life (it’s anything but linear).
Watch a bamboo tree grow. On the surface, it does apparently nothing for 2-3 years — but it’s actually gradually prepping underground, waiting for the right conditions, at which point it shoots up to the surface.
Or, more commonly, for personal development, you’ll take three steps forward, then back one or two, and then take another step forward.
Growth always happens in cycles, and it’s actively unhelpful to pretend otherwise.
@_catwu I'm on the entry-level Max plan ($100/mo) and by default "/model" lets me select either Default or Sonnet. If I manually type "/model opus" it selects Opus, but I wonder if this is intended. I'm guessing using Opus will hit the rate limit sooner?
We're ready for Microsoft Recall and the automatic screenshots it takes of everything on your desktop.
Signal Desktop on Windows now includes support for a new "Screen security" feature designed to block screenshots of your Signal chats.

@heynibras I've been doing this recently as well but hadn't thought about it this way! Instead of thinking "crap, I'm feeling this way again, as *always*", I ask myself "what events may have triggered this". Freeing and useful.
Now on Signal Desktop: A brand-new selection interface that makes it easy to find an emoji, sticker, or animated GIF that’s perfect for the moment. Happy chatting!
If you suffer from rumination or can’t get over regrets I think your worst sin might be pride because to be stuck in regret is to think that you had full control over that past situation instead of thinking maybe you were never as powerful or intelligent or wise as you believed
I used to be someone who could only relax (as in, feel good in my body) when everything was right and everything was never right so I was just never relaxed. then I learned I don’t actually have to hold tension every waking moment and it’s not helpful
