@Jason@farzyness And Jason, these are your “big tent” people who you have been, and in some case, still are giving the benefit of the doubt with BS comments like “both sides do it”. Enough already.
While this type of action should have been taken years ago, it fantastic to see the PAP taking the issue seriously now. This is such an easy win for the party and the country as a whole, especially since so many of the offending companies decided to register and list in Singapore - their desire to seek balanced corporate governance will have an edge to it.
@MarkWRowley Terrible event, but not a huge surprise on the attacker’s background. Not a One Nation ‘far right/redneck”, just another violent leftwing crusader.
Point well made. While some”locals” will.take any business at any cost if the situation is dire, most locals want to know that there is also direct community engagement and that the company isn’t just a foreign office scooping up profits and leaving. While the EU is lagging on AI, a global footprint is non negotiable. This is a think global act local playbook and it’s smart. And I bet it’s just the first shot across the bow to get eyes on the brand in the EU. The next will be the specific local community engagements in the areas the DC are going into. Super smart investments in brand quality.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT FOLKS IN SINGAPORE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR
* sorry for the caps. got too excited *
Points raised by Senior Minister K Shanmugam:
■ [On errant firms linked to plantations identified as haze source points], Singapore will look beyond the individual companies that hold the concessions, into large groups and "persons who may ultimately control them"
■ For example, he noted that Asia Pulp and Paper (part of the Sinar Mas Group) buys from three of the companies that NEA has sent preventive measures to
■ He also noted that First Resources had issued a detailed statement on its zero-burning policy and firefighting efforts, but added that statements alone are insufficient and must be backed by evidence
■ SGX has queried seven agri-companies listed in Singapore: Golden Agri-Resources, Bumitama Agri, First Resources, Wilmar International, Kencana Agri, Indofood Agri and TSH Resources
■ "Companies cannot play hide and seek with different corporate structures. Nor should they hope that because the evidence and actions are in Indonesia, they can escape responsibility in Singapore."
■ Apart from the agri-companies, he also noted that banks have lent money to these companies. If these companies have a potential connection to the fires, then the banks have to consider the environmental and legal risks
■ Singapore will also examine whether the companies linked to the haze are enjoying any benefits in Singapore in terms of government grants or incentives
■ The Singapore government will consider all the evidence fairly, and act based on full facts
Lastly, Singapore will sustain pressure on responsible companies even after the haze passes, and will amend current legislation or introduce new laws to ensure further cooperation if necessary
Firms need to back their claims with evidence. They cannot greenwash their behaviour
THANK YOU SIR

@CynicalPublius Ben Hodges is still on Obama’s payroll - literally. Heard him speak at a function in Singapore last year. So given he amplified McRaven, enough said on the leanings of the author.
Agreed. But the changes in the rules of engagement over the past 30 years, coupled with what appears to be politically timed investigations just neuters combat capability. Certainly not suggesting there shouldn’t clear standards applied. But you pull operators out and then send them back into the line of fire 48 hours later?
Politicians start wars, soldiers have the dirty job of fighting them.
They say history doesn’t repeat itself but it does rhyme. What did Nero while parts of Rome was burned to the ground - because he too was away?
Nero used the cleared land from the devastation to build a massive personal palace, the Domus Aurea (Golden House). To deflect suspicion that he started the fire to clear the land, he blamed and brutally persecuted the Christians.
So I’m guessing this will be framed as being caused by the “far right” and their greed, so more taxes and wealth redistribution will be the response.
