It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.
Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.
Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.
Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.
In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.
The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.
Today, just 17 days before the midterm elections, @Meta took down the national #NoKings Instagram account in the middle of the massive nationwide mobilization — then restored it and called it a “bad call.” That means it was done ON PURPOSE: Zuckerberg intentionally suppressed our 1st Amendment right to voice anti-Trump opinions on his platform.
Simultaneously, No Kings content was suppressed on @X while Trump's triumphant return to Musk's platform to blast out endorsements of Republican Senate candidates was boosted.
Why are Meta and X deliberately colluding to rig their algorithms in favor of Trump and Republicans, while silencing Democrats? Musk & Zuckerberg must disclose exactly what happened today — what was restricted, what was amplified, and most importantly why? Whose idea was it? Any guesses?
Trump's Billionaire Tech Bros. strategically diminished the #NoKingsDay national activation while amplifying Trump's desperate posts the cheating POS prays will help him avoid impeachment, conviction, removal and incarceration.
NOT A CHANCE.
“The bro presents with some combination of operator beard, Grunt Style t-shirt, “infidel” tattoo, “tactical pants,” a veteran-owned coffee roaster mug, and Spartan Race participation medals. These are all meant as badges of the bearer’s credibility as a warrior, but they usually hide a lack of competence or knowledge of organized warfare and its demands.”
A word, gentlemen.
I get it.
You're pissed that your time has passed. Yeah, you're still fitter than most of the soft slob dads you see at Publix. You're better armed than the local PD. So if North Korea ever decided for some reason to invade your little nowhere neighborhood, you're ready.
But the truth is next time the balloon really does go up, Colonel Trautman isn't going to ask you to come back one last time. He has droves of 19 year olds with more balls than brains coming through Basic all the time. And some of them will pass Selection. And they'll be kicking the doors. Not you.
Accepting it can be hard. Every time you're around those young bucks, you never fail to hear one whispering "Hey, that's him. He was with the 69th Thundercocks back in Iraq. Bro stacked bodies."
But, you never manage to hear his buddy reply "Fuck, he got old."
So you stew. All that anger at what we all see happening all the time and nowhere to put it. No target. No objective. No mission.
No enemy.
So you look for enemies. People to blame. People to denounce.
People to hate.
And you give voice to that hate online. Because there are loads of others, listless and angry, looking for the same thing you are. An enemy. So they can trick themselves into thinking spewing vitriol on the Internet is "doing something". Like you did. You're "taking action". You're "waking people up".
You're being a "leader".
But, at the end of the day, once you strip away all the parts that are utterly meaningless, all that's left is the hate.
Time is short. Trust me on that. One day you will realize you're closer to the exit than the onramp. And you will think about the legacy you're leaving. And about the Judgement we all must someday face.
Will God have you in the book as a warrior? A teacher? A builder of a family? A good example for those who come next?
Or that you squandered your life on hate?
I worry about this, because my time grows short. And because I'm as guilty as anyone else of allowing myself to wallow in anger and hate when I should have been building and uplifting.
I hope I can get right with God. I hope you can, too. You have time.
Don't waste it.
