Back in 1998, the great playwright Girish Karnad wrote a brilliant essay on the arts and social change in India. Sadly, it was published in Holland so little read here. It is wonderful to see the essay now available online for desis and non-desis both:

Reminder that you can watch / listen to Virgil's Eclogues read and explained in Latin, on YouTube, for free, by Cori Russo, who is one of the best Latin speakers in America (and probably also the world):

The use of pellet guns against protesters began in Kashmir, and now those guns are being deployed in the nation's capital. One clear lesson of recent US and Indian history is that tactics that originate in the 'periphery' will eventually be used in the center as well.
Huge congratulations to PKU alumni Wang Hong and Deng Yu, recipients of the 2026 Fields Medal — mathematics’ highest honor! 🧮
Announced at the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia, the pair are among four mathematicians worldwide to claim this prestigious prize, awarded every four years to outstanding scholars under 40.
The awards are historic on several levels.
—First time two mathematicians who completed undergraduate studies in mainland China win the Fields Medal in the same year.
—Both joined Peking University as undergraduates in 2007.
—Wang Hong becomes only the third female Fields Medalist ever, the first Chinese woman, and the first recipient with a bachelor’s degree from a mainland Chinese university.
We are immensely proud of their extraordinary breakthroughs and lasting contributions to global mathematics.
Christopher Nolan says his father forced him to abandon his filmmaking dreams to get a "real degree" after film schools refused to accept him
"I didn't go to film school cause I couldn't get into film school"
His father's advice: "he advised me 'go and get a real degree in a real subject. So that you have that to fall back on and then you could go to film school afterwards'. Which turned out not to be the case"
"I studied English, because that was the academic subject that I was best at and inclined most towards"
"it greatly informed my filmmaking process, my writing process. I started to become more at ease with a lot of the literary concepts that underlie film criticism"
Mubi sacará en una semana todas las películas de Kaurismäki. Por favor, denle un regalo a sus tremulosas vidas y vean cualquiera. Mi favorita (todas): Hojas de otoño y La chica de la fábrica de fósforos.
