@Annoyed_Science@zugzwang2007@AlextheYounga My point is: we often prove causation w correlation paired w a valid causal identification strategy. Sometimes the correlation doesn’t even appear until said strategy is used
Plotting X vs Y might show nothing, but you might still get a result after u apply say, IV + controls
@Annoyed_Science@zugzwang2007@AlextheYounga I'm not comfortable saying that a lack of correlation is often a lack of causation. The real world is very messy and you can never see the counterfactuals
If ur studying the effect of X on Y, finding no correlation (with no identification strategy) is not conclusive of anything
@Annoyed_Science@zugzwang2007@AlextheYounga I mean, I guess! I would agree that, assuming you do your due diligence, true correlations dont happen without some causal factor
But still imo that's not a very useful principle when trying to parse out specific causes and effects, which is what the og phrase normally refers to
@tracewoodgrains Not that I agree w her but- in 1999 it wouldve been correct to say internet stocks are a bubble And that the internet will be so pervasive itll have xyz harmful effects
Imo its also a coherent arg that theres too much buildout for demand rn And it could help build bioweps later
Here's the game clock footage in my original vs NBC's supposedly synced game clock. You can see that in NBC's version, the game footage is lagging behind their clock's footage. Hope this clears up my original post. Also to everyone saying my original post was wrong/stupid, enjoy being wrong lmao. Pause at any point and you'll see how off theirs was
@rationalhumanis@evandawson Nothing in the video proves that NBC's stream of the game and of the clock were synced up properly, which is the main contention.
@BarryOnHere Incorrect. You can time the play yourself- it only took 8.5 seconds. We know the refs explicitly said to set the clock to 9 seconds right before.
Something got fucked with nbc’s clock or stream bc whatever they’re showing is 2/3 of a second off.
@DetLionsWatch@All22_Ray@JakeSatterthwa2@bigten You are still correct, but note that that timer is not fractions of a second, but frames. you can see the second timer tick up every time the frame counter hits 30. so 8 seconds and 11 frames is really 8.37 seconds
@PuckFupett69 that guys arg is bad but the original statement is still wrong. Wages are set by market forces. There is nothing in this process that would allow one to attribute fractions of output to individual workers
@Antweegonus Really really dumb. The reason progs think trump is a threat to democracy is bc he they think he tried to coup the United States of America. Which also happens to be true, ofc. you guys are all pseudo intellectuals that don’t understand the first thing about your own enemies
@Albulipe1@MattLutzPhi@asymmetricinfo “I like apples”
“lowering immigration will increase human suffering”
Are these facts or opinions? Op thinks the latter is an opinion, but theoretically it could be measured objectively. The former is often considered an opinion, but how could anyone argue w my own preferences?
@VertexFan not even fully disagreeing w you. that guy is going to be “functionally” stronger than 90% of people at most functions out there
But it’s also clear that his goal is aesthetics and not strength. Which is fine! Its also fine for people to have dating preferences pro or anti this

@l33tg4m3r4lif3@GrimmishPro@maklelan its not obtuse at all when spoken. And also, who could he possibly be referring to as "foreigners" or "aliens" given that everyone present clearly understood that this would make the children of chinese immigrants citizens
@wastetime @JewiestCaesar @HashtagGriswold I kinda think they don't. The wording makes it very unclear what's actually going on in there but it seems like they're running a regression on each variable individually.
However, even if they did, don't you think that people that get cancer diagnoses would up their sunscreen ?
@jasperk04@thingsshldwrk I promise you the liberals are not looking at the stock market when they argue the economy is good (or at least not great recession bad). And I don't think "real wages" is an abstract measure at all
