It's no secret that he and Gilmour couldn't always get along, but the music Waters created with Pink Floyd was nothing short of genius.

I can't help but wonder what kind of music we'd have heard if they had stayed together until the very end.

Some people put their ideas out in the world and hope they catch on. Not Gloria Steinem.

Through her writing, her speeches, and her organizing, she demanded that the world pay attention to all the ways that women had been — and in some cases, still are — treated unfairly. And she helped awaken us to problems like domestic violence, the lack of affordable child care, and unfair hiring practices that had too often been ignored or overlooked.

Gloria really was larger than life. Today, generations of women are walking a little taller and aiming a little higher because of what she fought for and achieved. Michelle and I are thinking of her family today, and everyone — women and men — who were inspired by her towering example.

In 1957, a 22-year-old Gloria Steinem got pregnant.

She had already broken off an engagement and was waiting in London for a visa to go to India.

Abortion was still illegal in most circumstances.

She eventually found a doctor willing to help her. He asked for two promises:

Don’t tell anyone my name.

And do what you want to do with your life.

She kept the first promise for nearly 60 years.

Then in 2015, she dedicated her memoir to him.

His name was Dr. John Sharpe.

Steinem later said that abortion allowed her to avoid a marriage she knew was wrong, travel to India and ultimately live the life she chose.

Whatever you think about Gloria Steinem, there’s something pretty remarkable about a doctor risking his career for a 22-year-old woman he barely knew because he believed an unjust law shouldn’t decide the rest of her life.
