People often speak as though Palestinian suffering in 1948 created a permanent moral license for terrorism, massacres, hijackings, or calls for global violence. It did not. Tragedy does not excuse the deliberate targeting of innocent people, no matter who commits it.

At the same time, many of those very same voices dismiss Jewish history as though the murder of six million Jews, the displacement of millions more during and after World War II, and the expulsion of Jewish communities from Arab countries somehow erased the Jewish right to safety, sovereignty, or self-defense. They speak as if Jewish suffering has an expiration date.

That contradiction reflects something deeply troubling: a form of prejudice that applies one moral standard to Jews and another to everyone else, while excusing violence from some and condemning self-protection from others.
