It’s 8:30 AM. Daniel, a Loan Portfolio Manager at Citi, has a management meeting in a few hours.

His director asks:
“How is the loan portfolio doing?”

He could open 4 different Excel files, pull numbers together and build another report.
Or… he could open one dashboard.
So I built one.

Started with 4 Excel tables → Power Query → Data Model → Calculated Columns → DAX → Power BI dashboard.

The dashboard gives him a quick view of:
• Total loan portfolio
• Expected interest
• Expected repayment
• Customers
• Segment performance
• Disbursement trends

But I didn't want it to look like another default Power BI dashboard.

So I built the visuals with HTML Content Visuals, including interactive KPI cards that flip when clicked to reveal more context.

I used Claude as a coding partner to help turn some of the visual ideas I had into HTML.
This project had actually been sitting unfinished for a while.

I finally decided to bring it back.
Because the goal wasn't just:
“Can I build a Power BI dashboard?”
It was:
“If I managed a loan portfolio, what would I need to see the moment I opened my dashboard?”

Still just page 1.

But we're back. 👀

However it was ~2h of painful iteration for one report page.

Everyone is worried about losing their job to AI, while what everyone should probably worry about is losing their critical thinking to AI…

You ask Al for a measure, it gives you one.
You ask for a chart, it gives you one.
You ask a question, it explains.
It never sounds unsure.
Output + logic + conviction.
So it automatically anchors you to the options it created (best negotiating technique ever, btw).

You start tweaking from what it made.
You're iterating inside its box.
Super dangerous situation 😅

I think about my early consulting years for this. The work was slow and somewhat annoying back then - every measure written on purpose, every chart super thought through, every number checked 10x before it went out. The effort it took to create forced the quality.

Now this barrier is gone. People assume you can let it figure out the core. It's the exact opposite.
Al will happily build you a box of options and lock you in it too.

So the analysts worth more in five years are the ones who can look at what Al hands them and say: "That's wrong, here's why, here's what we actually need."

A few days ago, I shared how I was experimenting with DAX + HTML to build interactive KPI cards in Power BI.

Well... here's the next update. 👇

The "Loan Portfolio Overview" page is starting to come together, and this time I challenged myself to build, every chart as a custom HTML visual.

One of my favorites?

The Processing Fee by Department chart.

Funny enough, I wasn't looking for Power BI inspiration.

I was scrolling through Pinterest, saw a concentric arc design, paused for a second and thought...

"I wonder if I can recreate that in Power BI?"

A few prompts, a lot of DAX logic, several iterations with AI, and a few moments of "why isn't this rendering?" later... it finally came together.

Alongside that, I also built:

A Disbursement Trend, that highlights the peak lending month, marks the latest month, and lets users explore monthly loan disbursements over time.

An Estimated Interest by Product, ranking that immediately shows which loan products are expected to generate the highest interest income.

Together with the KPI cards, the page now tells a much better story.

Instead of just showing numbers, it answers questions.

* How is lending changing over time?
* Which products are driving profitability?
* Where is processing fee income coming from?

One thing I've been enjoying about this project is realizing that dashboard design is becoming less about knowing every programming language and more about understanding the business problem.

I don't know HTML.

But I know the experience I want users to have.

I can explain the business logic, define how the interaction should work, and use AI as a development partner to bring those ideas to life.

That's probably been the biggest lesson from this project so far.

You don't have to limit yourself to the visuals that come with Power BI.

Sometimes the dashboard you imagine is one conversation, and a bit of experimentation—away.

(Still plenty to improve, but I'm really happy with how the Overview page is shaping up).

I've been working on a Bank Loan analytics project recently, and one of the most interesting parts has been experimenting with custom visuals in Power BI.

Instead of relying only on the default visual library, I explored combining DAX with HTML content to create more interactive KPI cards, and the experience has been incredible.

For this project's Loan Portfolio Overview page, I wanted the KPI cards to do more than display a number.

I wanted them to tell a story.

So, I designed a card that reveals additional insights when interacted with:

📌 Portfolio KPI on the front

📈 Trend analysis on the back

📅 Peak month highlights

🔍 Context that helps users understand why the number matters

My first version used a hover effect to flip the card, but it turned out to be a little too sensitive for users. After a few iterations, I switched to a click-to-flip interaction, and it immediately felt more intuitive.

Here's the interesting part: I don't know HTML.

I focused on the business logic, defined the user experience I wanted, explained the calculations, and provided examples of the output. Then, I used AI to help translate those ideas into DAX and HTML.

It's a reminder that modern analytics isn't just about writing code, it's about understanding the problem, communicating the logic clearly, and leveraging the right tools to bring ideas to life.

The combination of DAX, HTML, and AI is opening up new possibilities for creating reports that are not only informative but engaging.
