The Metals of Power & Motion

[Solcoa Industries @solcoatech]

We’ve secured $75M in financing to build Solcoa One, our first commercial rare earth metallization plant.

[Hooman @hoomanrenezhad]

We raised $80M to build the future of rare earth metalmaking. Samarium, for example, is vital to America's defense. We are the only active American producer.

We’re hiring staff mechanical engineers, fabricators, recruiters, etc. Join us. DMs open.

"There is a lot of room for America to do what it does best: push the frontier, build the new thing, and win on innovation.” For @Techweek_, Solcoa CEO @hoomanrenezhad joined OVNI Capital and @gigascale’s “From Ore to Orbit” panel at the SVB Experience Center.

Thank you to @EvalineTsai for moderating, OVNI and Gigascale for organizing, and the SVB Experience Center for hosting this event. (3/3)

Solcoa is closing these gaps with our novel metallization technology for NdPr and samarium. Our process makes metal faster and at far greater scale than conventional methods, and we’re proud to be building it here in the US. (2/3)

Today, China dominates rare-earth mining and processing.

But that wasn’t always the case.

Solcoa’s @hoomanrenezhad explains how the West lost its rare-earth mojo:

"So contrary to popular belief, we do mine in the West. We have an enormous rare earth mine in Australia. There’s one in California."

“The actual raw feedstock is not rare."

“The bottleneck is what you do after it. It’s the processing. That is something that we’re completely unable to do in the West."

“We actually invented these processes in America."

"The technologies used to make rare earths in China today are American technologies from the Manhattan Project.”

“We built this technology and these systems, and then we shipped it to China. China dominated. They matured it. They took over.”

Now his company is trying to bring that capability back to the U.S. with a process built for today’s economics.

“If we were just copying that same technology stack again, it was impossible. The economics don’t close.”
