A New Zealand company run by a British family of marine insurance experts has helped Russian and Iranian “shadow fleet” ships transport $35 billion worth of oil and petroleum products, Reuters reported.
The company, Maritime Mutual, owned by Paul Rankin, insured nearly one-sixth of the tankers targeted by Western sanctions.
According to the Center for the Study of Energy and Clean Air (CREA), these vessels carried at least $16.7 billion worth of Russian oil and petroleum products and $18.2 billion from Iran since sanctions were imposed.
“These figures exceed those of many major players involved in the shadow fleet that we monitor,” said David Tannenbaum, director of the consulting firm Blackstone Compliance Services and a former U.S. Treasury sanctions specialist.

We need a just transition away from fossil fuels to help us hit Net Zero . You don't make that happen with 100 new oil and gas licenses , a new coal mine , or by tearing up plans to tackle vehicle emissions & phase out gas boilers – that's why I'm taking the Government to court .
