VIDEO | Glasgow: The first person judoka Asmita Dey wanted to tell about her Commonwealth Games gold was the one person she no longer could do it. Her father, a cycle mechanic who earned barely Rs 300 a day and raised his family in a mud house in a small village in Tripura, died of a brain stroke seven months ago.
On Friday, as the 23-year-old became the first Indian judoka to win a Commonwealth Games gold in the women's 48kg category, the medal felt as much his as hers.
"When my father passed away, I thought everything had finished because he was the one who supported me," Asmita said, struggling to hold back tears after her historic triumph.
For a few moments, the celebrations gave way to memories of the man who had carried her dream long before it became India's dream.
"I am from a very small village in Tripura. People there don't dream this big. But Papa always supported me," she said.

Almost no one really understands the gargantuan damage that Lalu caused to Railways. Lalu, ably assisted by Mamata later, delivered a death blow to Railways from which it hasn't recovered to this day.
And this was a reverse economic miracle - the kind Lalu is an expert in - he managed to do it at a time when our economy (and therefore railway freight) grew at the fastest ever pace.
The biggest joke is Harvard called this village bumpkin to deliver a lecture on the Railway turnaround. The bast*** literally committed every possible blunder a business can do:
- reduce fares (adjusted for inflation) on passenger operations, which was already hugely loss-making
- severely underinvestment in capex at a time of unprecedented growth, putting severe physical damage to operating assets, overcongestion and
- absolute neglect of railway safety. You will see that the improvement on safety metrics was the slowest during UPA period
- Devastated the railways business model by hiking salaries and pension to unsustainable levels (ok, that was a collective UPA crime)
- Minimal investment in research and new product lines
Our ancestors literally carved a fully functional water valve out of solid stone😳
Notice how turning the carved dial completely stops and starts the water flow. Ancient Indian architecture wasn’t just about aesthetics; their practical engineering was on a different level.
how did they think they could pull this off in the agent of LLM.
(tbf: they almost did -- it is only ONE person -- me -- if not your kids would memorize this for Mid Term Exams)..
The Night Quantum Physics Almost Went Up in Flames (And Niels Bohr Did Not Care)!
In Jan 1960, Niels Bohr visited India as the personal guest of PM Nehru. Bhabha had planned Bohr’s schedule meticulously, keeping the giant of modern physics tightly aligned with official state research facilities.
However, Alladi Ramakrishnan managed to invite Bohr & his wife Margrethe to dinner at Ekamra Nivas to meet his "stripling physicists".
Bohr arrived at the Madras bungalow. What was supposed to be a polite, brief official courtesy call turned into an open-air physics session under the lawn's mango tree that lasted past midnight.
As recorded in Ramakrishnan's memoirs (The Alladi Diary), a govt aide repeatedly reminded Bohr of his official bedtime at the Govt House, which Bohr completely ignored.
Bohr got so deeply engrossed in debating quantum mechanics with the students that he absentmindedly tried to slip his still lit smoking pipe directly into his coat pocket, forcing his wife Margrethe to intervene to prevent the father of quantum theory from setting himself on fire.
When Bohr arrived at the airport the next day for a press conference, journalists asked him what impressed him most in India. Bohr publicly praised 2 things:
- TIFR
- The informal theoretical physics seminars conducted on the lawn at Ekamra Nivas.
When C. Subramaniam (the Finance Minister of Madras) saw Bohr's endorsement, he met with Ramakrishnan. Shortly after, Nehru himself met Ramakrishnan’s students at the Raj Bhavan in Madras.
In Jan 1962, this group was formally transformed into MATSCIENCE (The Institute of Mathematical Sciences), giving Southern India a world-class theoretical research institute.

The purpose of human life is to attain Moksha, which can be achieved by controlling our Indriyas (senses).
Moksha is also known as the merging of the Jivatma (individual soul) with the Parmatma (Supreme God).
In our scriptures, symbols hold deep significance. The Linga symbolizes the supreme God, while Nandi symbolizes the individual soul. Through constant meditation, the individual soul (Nandi) merges with the supreme God (Linga) to become Nandeeshwara.

Mughal soldiers were so badly blockaded that they were forced to eat straw and drink filthy water to survive. Qasim Khan, the Mughal commander-in-chief, was so humiliated by defeat that he committed suicide during the siege. #sangamtalks
Not many know about Tōtārām Sanāḍhya. His "viral" book on his 21 years in Fiji paved the way for the abolition of indentured servitude which was just slavery by another name.
In my dulcet voice, his life and impact; and do subscribe to @AtharvaForum.
