If you can’t immediately get better via the draft, isn’t it more important that smaller market teams have the ability to improve through free agency? Right now star players only go to a handful of teams because those teams make more revenue and can spend considerably more. Now imagine that Pittsburgh has to spend $40M a year on the offseason and the Dodgers are maxed out, that creates potential for talent to choose playing in Pittsburgh.

Every owner could spend 500 million on salaries and half the teams would still have a losing record. Big market teams spend more because they make more, because they get more money from TV and attendance. If you want small market teams to spend more you have to give them some revenue from the big market teams and that’s exactly the plan MLB has drawn up for the future.

Amazon had to burn cash to capture market share and build scalable future revenue streams. MLB teams operate in protected monopolies with revenue sharing, and franchise values keep exploding regardless of spending. If Pirates valuations keep exploding without losing money, then clearly operating losses aren’t required for MLB franchise growth.

I’m sure if you bought an investment property you would not increase expenses and willingly take a loss month-to-month simply because the value of your house was appreciating. You’d have to dip into other accounts, borrow money, or sell part of your house just to pay the bills. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a business owner trying to not lose money year-to-year even if hypothetical values of the underlying investment increase.

You do realize teams have a lot of more expenses beyond major league player salaries in order to operate, right? expenses like stadium ops, rent, electricity, insurance, marketing, minor league salaries, front office salaries, international bonuses, international complexes, game day staff, travel, medical and healthcare.
