This is why the Kshama Sawant campaign should be supported by every leftist full stop. Shes not funded by Big tech, aipac, pharmac &shes not forced to capitulate to establishment crooks (like DSA candidates). Domestic&foreign policy positions are clear&consistent. Support Kshama
BREAKING NEWS! My antiwar socialist campaign for Congress is proud to be endorsed by The Stranger newspaper!
The Stranger newspaper was described by The New York Times last December as "a progressive kingmaker." It has a readership of an estimated 400,000 people and is the most important endorsement in the Seattle area.
My campaign is fighting for an end to all military aid to Israel and for free healthcare for all funded by taxing the rich. My main opponent is 29-year incumbent Adam Smith, a darling of AIPAC and the war profiteers.
There are only FIVE WEEKS left to go before the August 4th primary election!!
Help us deliver a blow to AIPAC and the pro-genocide Zionist lobby and elect the first-ever revolutionary socialist to the U.S. Congress. Donate and sign up to volunteer now! https://t.co/QZDWPA44EE
My campaign is proud to be endorsed by Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “The Color Purple,” novelist, short story writer, and activist.
“I am proud to support Kshama Sawant’s upcoming Seattle, WA congressional election campaign. Her victory would mark a great advance for all who stand opposed to today’s endless U.S. wars against working people at home and abroad.
"Her defense of immigrant workers, her opposition to mass deportations, her fight to abolish ICE, declaring, “No Human Being Is Illegal,” and her opposition to racism, sexism and LGBTQI discrimination are inspiring.
"Her method centers on mobilizing working people and their allies among the oppressed in united mass mobilizations to defend their own interests.
"Vote Kshama in 2026!”
The Republican Party’s Doug Basler has just entered the race for Washington state’s ninth Congressional District, recently publicly declaring:
“With the entrance of the socialist candidate from Seattle, many of our local folks have approached me with the request that I run again for US Congress."
Sometimes politicians in both parties of the billionaires say the quiet part out loud. Basler has since quickly moved to delete this statement from his website. But the motivation of the establishment is still clear: to try to block our independent socialist campaign by any means necessary.
Basler and the Republican Party are clearly not running to try to defeat Democratic incumbent Adam Smith. Why would they, when Adam Smith has been such a dogged representative of the war profiteers, Zionist lobby, and the billionaire class? As one right-wing commenter remarked, “Smith sounds more like a Republican than a lot of Republicans.” For the Republican Party, this is not about defeating neoliberal warmonger Smith. No Republican has broken 30 percent of the vote against Smith in 15 years, including Basler himself, who has previously run against Smith many times.
But my revolutionary socialist campaign is enough of a threat to both the Republican and Democratic parties that they need strategies to try to stop us. My campaign is fighting to win free healthcare for all funded by taxing the rich, for an end to all military aid to Israel and end all weapons and tech for imperialist war, to shut down ICE and the detention centers, and for national rent control. We have won tremendous support from working people, and have seven times as many donors as Adam Smith, with over $525,000 raised already.
It’s in this context that Basler has been recruited to the Republican ticket, and the two weaker Republican candidates who had previously entered the race have dropped out. This strategy conveniently leaves Basler, a high-profile Republican, in the race as the sole recipient of the GOP vote.
Both parties regularly collude to block working-class candidates by electoral maneuvers. In 2020, the Democratic leadership, led by Obama, worked to push several corporate Democrats out of the race in the run up to Super Tuesday while leaving Elizabeth Warren in to divide the vote with Bernie Sanders — a successful coup that put Joe Biden on top despite the total lack of enthusiasm for his candidacy.
This move to retain Basler as the lone Republican candidate is yet another reminder that both parties are determinedly united in keeping any working-class challenge out of Congress.
The billionaires are nervous because our campaign comes from the long track record of winning unheard-of working-class victories, from the nation’s highest minimum wage to the Amazon Tax to unprecedented renters’ rights. Both parties represent American imperialism and are united in their opposition to serious antiwar candidates.
This is why we need working people to get involved and strongly support our campaign. Let’s not fall for the political theater of Democratic and Republican parties posing as mortal enemies. They each want to win elections against each other. But they BOTH represent the ruling class and they are BOTH enemies of the working class. And they are in complete agreement on the priority of trying to block an independent socialist from getting into Congress.
We need to go all out to win this election. DONATE and VOLUNTEER for my campaign today at https://t.co/sh3zyhgTI7.
Winning this election would be a historic step towards building a new party for the working class, and would deal a gigantic blow to Wall Street and both parties of war and genocide.
The photo in the article is of revolutionary socialist Kshama Sawant (@cmkshama) who was on the Seattle City Council for ten years, from 2014 through 2023. She won unparalleled renters' rights victories, and she has fought relentlessly for rent control.
It's strange that Current Affairs would use Kshama's photo in an article supporting rent control and not even mention her name. Your readers and working people nationally would really benefit if you did an interview with her about her Congressional campaign against genocidal billionaire-backed Democrat Adam Smith.
Kshama fought for rent control free of corporate loopholes. All but one Democratic City Councilmembers voted against Kshama's legislation in 2023.
Despite the Democratic Party's opposition, Kshama used her office to organize an army of working people and won renters' rights like:
👉 A first-in-the-nation ban on winter evictions
👉 A moratorium on school year evictions of children and public school workers
👉 A $10 cap on late rent fees
👉 Six months' notice for any rent increases
👉 Requiring landlords to pay three months of rent if they increase rents by 10+ percent
👉 Banning rent increases in units with housing code violations
👉 Funding for publicly-provided legal defense to prevent evictions
The movement of renters in Seattle led by Kshama's City Council office actively fought for residential AND commercial rent control to help struggling small businesses. Kshama’s office won the nation's strongest renters' bill of rights unmatched by any progressive Democrat or DSA elected. She also won the nation's highest minimum wage and the Amazon Tax.
Join Kshama's independent socialist campaign for Congress. We are fighting for national rent control with a massive expansion of social housing funded by taxing the rich. https://t.co/F7LcgH8Yk9

We’ll hold a short rally and training followed by tabling and postering to get the word out to hundreds of working people about our independent socialist, antiwar, pro-worker campaign for Congress!
Help us gather thousands of signatures to get on the ballot before the deadline in early May.
Winning this campaign would be a historic breakthrough in US politics.
The track record of my Seattle City Council office is unparalleled because of the movement-based, fighting approach we took to win major victories for working people.
My fellow revolutionary socialists and I helped lead the movement to win the nation's highest minimum wage, the Amazon Tax, and landmark renters’ rights victories. I would take the exact same approach in Congress, using my position to build mass nationwide movements to fight the rich and their political servants in the Democratic and Republican parties.
We know that big business and the weapons industry will spend millions to try to stop us, and it will take an army of working-class volunteers to win!
Whether it’s your first time canvassing or you are a frequent volunteer, please come out on Saturday.
See you at @ 11 AM, starting from the Judkins Park Light Rail Station, East entrance!
I urge Seattle DSA members to attend the Saturday convention and vote in support of our campaign for Congress.
Our campaign is fighting to end all U.S. military aid to Israel, to shut down ICE, and to win free healthcare for all funded by taxing the rich.
This is a historic opportunity to elect the first-ever revolutionary socialist to the U.S. Congress, and to build on the record of unparalleled victories we have won through class struggle in Seattle, like the nation's highest minimum wage, the Amazon Tax, and landmark renters' rights.
Unfortunately, this horrific post I'm quoting could not go without a response. This DSA member is referring to the murder of Leon Trotsky by one of Stalin's agents. Trotsky and Lenin were two of the indispensable leaders of the 1917 Russian Revolution, the most progressive event in modern human history.
It's a sad commentary on the current state of the left that 45 people have clicked like on the post by this DSA member. I urge DSA leadership to disavow it.
Regarding this person's accusation, it is my responsibility as a socialist to raise criticisms of self-identified socialists like AOC and Mamdani when they betray working people. I don't apologize for that. Nor do I apologize for pointing out that the Democratic Party is a dead end for our movements.
@SeattleDSA@DemSocialists
My opponent, @RepAdamSmith, sent out an email titled "I do not support this war."
But Smith was one of the 115 House Dems (with 27 Senate Dems) who voted for $900.6 B war spending in Dec & gave Trump $8 B more for wars than even Trump asked for.
The war on Iran is bipartisan.
@cmkshama@RepAdamSmith Insane that Smith thinks he can get away with taking an anti-war stance when he’s been funding war for his entire 29 year career in office. It’s only because he’s challenged by a genuine anti-war candidate like Kshama Sawant that he is trying the muddy the waters with this crap.

@cmkshama
@cmkshama The U.S. military is also the largest polluter on earth. The climate movement and anti-war movements can not be separated from each other if we want to win anything, and neither can be divorced from an anti-capitalist movement either.
The Vietnam war was ended when the working class got organized. We have the power to do the same not only for Gaza, but for everywhere imperialism rears its ugly head. We’ll need to break from both parties of war and genocide, as well as the plethora of other misleaders, to do so
Two days ago, the U.S. House voted for the annual military funding bill. It is a horrific nearly trillion dollars for more weapons and bloodshed.
My opponent Democrat Adam Smith has been a cheerleader for this bill. Democrats like him are proud of their bipartisan agreement with Trump and the Republicans.
Join me LIVE today, 12/12, at 3 pm PT / 6 pm ET for the latest report on this bill and how working people can build militant movements to end the forever wars by the Democrats and Republicans.
