Ten million people have watched an MIT professor accidentally destroy the executive coaching industry.

He filmed the lecture once in January 2018 and died eighteen months later.

Executive coaches charge fifteen thousand dollars a session to teach a third of what he covered in one hour for free.

His name was Patrick Winston. He ran the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 1972 to 1997 and wrote the AI textbook every computer science major in the world read for thirty years.

Every January for four decades, he gave a lecture called "How to Speak."

His entire framework fits on a napkin.

Do not read. Be in the image. Keep images simple. Eliminate clutter. Start with an empathetic connection. End with a punch line the audience can repeat over dinner. Never open with a joke. Never end with "thank you."

That last rule alone has probably cost the executive coaching industry a hundred million dollars.

"Your success in life will be determined largely by your ability to speak, your ability to write, and the quality of your ideas. In that order."

That is the actual opening line of the lecture. Winston believed it strongly enough to spend fifty years teaching computer scientists how to talk.

Founders spend $80,000 on an MBA and then hire a communications coach to teach them the same material Winston filmed once for free. Engineers write brilliant code and lose promotions to teammates who watched this lecture on the train.

Winston died in 2019. Almost none of the ten million viewers have actually implemented the four rules on the napkin.

The napkin is free. The willingness to actually use it in your next meeting is the entire edge.

When my oldest was born, they refused to let me hold her because her oxygen levels were low. But I was persistent, and they eventually relented, allowing her to lay on my chest until the NICU nurse came to roll her away. When the nurse arrived, I asked that they check her oxygen levels one more time before taking her. They did. Oxygen: 100%. Perfect. The nurse shrugged and left. Our baby girl was healthy. She just needed me. My heartbeat, my warmth, my touch. She needed her mom.

Stories like this aren’t rare. Newborns need their moms to regulate their oxygen and heart rate. That’s why, when at all possible, most doctors and hospitals give baby to mom right away.

We know this when it comes to normal births, but when it comes to surrogacy - especially the kind when two men are purchasing a baby from a woman - the baby is immediately and intentionally taken away from his or her mom and given to two strangers. It is not surprising that these babies often undergo complications post-birth. Beyond that, we don’t fully know the physiological and psychological effect of robbing babies of their mothers at birth.

It’s worse treatment than we give puppies and kittens, but when it’s for “inclusion,” it’s celebrated.

Adoption is one thing - it redeems a broken situation. But surrogacy is another - it intentionally creates the broken situation.

Babies’ needs will always matter more than adults’ wants.

@MrsCMFrancis I try to keep one convertible bra in circulation so I have it as an option. There are some good options for nipple covers like cakes. I think wearing spaghetti straps with no bras is acceptable and if you are comfortable, go for it. Other people’s comfort is not your problem!

@offgridteacher @theatomicmom My babysitter gave me best advice in don’t show any emotions about it. Oh you peed. Now we need to stop playing, wash you up, get clean undies and go rinse underwear and put in washer. I made it really unfun to have accidents but not emotional

@offgridteacher @theatomicmom Pull up over undies for nap. Or any time mom needs a safety net. I also used a sticker chart for no accidents in a day with a big reward when filled! Ours was a big girl bed. Biggest advice I received is never let it be emotional. It’s a business transaction.

@thruforestswild Tallow and castor oil are not really hydrating but they create a great barrier to keep your hydration in! Ceravae has some good lightweight options.
