Good afternoon everyone! I'm Phil Roos and honored to be appointed to this position by @GovWhitmer and committed to strengthening @MichiganEGLE's role in protecting our state’s natural resources and the health of all Michiganders who rely on clean water, air and land. 🧵
.@EPA revised the Toxic Substances Control Act risk determination for 1,4-dioxane, finding that it presents an unreasonable risk of injury to health. Comments due on 9/8 after publication on 7/26. #StateImpactAlert.

Dioxane is a "forever" chemical once it gets into anaerobic groundwater with none of the things needed to break it down. Without the data to track its movement to define the problem, solutions can be sketchy.

with EPA, Michigan AG & EGLE + local officials + audience Q&A
Join Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) for a Community Update Forum on the Gelman Dioxane Plume issue on Wednesday, June 28 from 5:30-7 pm. Held at the Learning Resource Center, 4135 Washtenaw Ave, Ann Arbor.
Join me along with @EPA@MichiganEGLE@MIAttyGen on June 28th at 530pm at the Washtenaw Learning Resource Center for a community forum on the Gelman Dioxane Plume.
Top dioxane discharges in wastewater as reported in Table 2 were in WV AL SC NC & MS. The one in WV almost matches the annual rate of Gelman Sciences in MI 1966-1986, except Gelman discharged mostly to unlined treatment ponds still tracked today. See https://t.co/y8ZQYCVXfE

2022 Court of Appeals ruling vacated the 2021 local court ruling (i.e. 2020 4th CJ Gelman dioxane cleanup plan with qtrly hearings to correct the flaws) opened door for Gelman to further weaken cleanup in this new 2023 4th CJ plan. We need EPA in ASAP!
A step in the right direction to restore what the court of appeals undid last year but no mention of ongoing efforts to fix the problems with the 2020-2021 4th CJ proposal. Note that MI's current dioxane cleanup criteria are still less protective than the <1995 pre-Engler era.
Entry of this amended consent judgment accomplishes important goals that have been in the works for some time, requiring Gelman to comply with the significantly lower and more protective cleanup criteria for 1,4-dioxane.

Seems like good news in preparation for EPA taking over enforcement of the site's cleanup.
Will be reviewing it to see how many of the "poison pills" are addressed that were in the 2021 proposed 4th Consent Judgment settlement. #dioxane#Gelman
The Michigan Attorney General’s Office and EGLE announced a new consent agreement with Gelman/Danaher regarding the 1,4 dioxane plume in Wsshtenaw County:

I look forward to digging into the details.
Scientists from the NUS College of Design and Engineering are developing safe and industry-viable ways to store natural gas, paving the way for a cleaner future. Read about their recent work on using dioxane to form methane hydrates at room temperature.

Sanford FL seeks $60M to remove dioxane from its water supply even though dioxane levels are below 0.35 ppb.
Meanwhile, Michigan's EGLE's lab cannot even detect dioxane as low as 0.35 ppb.
