Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye Elected New Chairman of ECOWAS

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has officially handed over the Chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. At the end of the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS heads of state and government, Bio officially introduced Faye and handed him the symbol of authority of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State. Bio said he was honoured to lead the regional bloc. Faye is now leading ECOWAS, an organisation facing regional challenges, setting a new direction for cooperation and integration, and making decisions that impact over 450 million people in West Africa.

Famous Sierra Leoneans: Meet Dr. John Albert Musselman Karefa-Smart

Dr. John Albert Musselman Karefa-Smart (17 June 1915 – 26 August 2010) was one of Sierra Leone's greatest statesmen—a pioneering physician, founding father, diplomat, educator, and internationally respected public health leader whose influence stretched far beyond Africa.

Born in Rotifunk, Moyamba District, Dr. Karefa-Smart received an outstanding education, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Fourah Bay College, a Bachelor of Science from Otterbein College (USA), a Doctor of Medicine from McGill University (Canada), and a Master of Public Health from Harvard University. He also served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps during the Second World War before dedicating his life to medicine and public service.

In 1951, he became one of the founding members of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) and played a central role in the constitutional negotiations that led to Sierra Leone's independence in 1961. He later became the country's first Minister of Foreign Affairs, helping establish Sierra Leone's diplomatic relations with the world and representing the newly independent nation at the United Nations.

Before becoming Foreign Minister, he also served as Minister of Lands, Mines and Labour, where he contributed to the organisation and development of Sierra Leone's diamond sector during the country's early years of self-government.

After leaving government, Dr. Karefa-Smart built an extraordinary international career in public health. Between 1965 and 1970, he served as Assistant Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), helping shape global health policies and strengthening healthcare systems in developing countries. He later worked as a WHO consultant and adviser across Africa and other regions, contributing to disease control, medical education, and public health development.

An accomplished academic, he taught at institutions including the University of Ibadan, Columbia University, Harvard University, Boston University, Howard University, Wellesley College, and Xavier University of Louisiana. Throughout his teaching career, he mentored generations of students, including future Nobel Prize laureate Wole Soyinka and future Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first elected female head of state.

Dr. Karefa-Smart was licensed to practise medicine in seven countries and worked in more than 120 countries during a distinguished career spanning over six decades. His remarkable achievements earned him international recognition, including induction into the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges Hall of Excellence, making him the first African to receive the honour.

Even after spending many years abroad, he remained committed to Sierra Leone. In 1996, he returned to national politics by founding the United National People's Party (UNPP) and contested the presidential election, continuing his lifelong commitment to democratic governance and national development.

Dr. John Albert Musselman Karefa-Smart passed away in Freetown on 26 August 2010 at the age of 95 and was honoured with a state funeral. He is remembered as one of Sierra Leone's finest sons—a visionary leader whose legacy in medicine, diplomacy, education, and public service continues to inspire generations across Africa and the world.

Famous Sierra Leoneans: Meet Dr. James O.C. Jonah

Dr. James O.C. Jonah is one of Sierra Leone's most distinguished diplomats and international civil servants, whose career has helped shape global diplomacy for more than three decades.

Born in Freetown on 27 January 1934, Dr. Jonah joined the United Nations in 1963 and steadily rose through its ranks, serving in some of the organisation's most critical political and peacekeeping roles. He advised senior UN leaders on major international crises, including peace efforts in the Middle East, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and United Nations peacekeeping operations.

His exceptional leadership saw him appointed Assistant Secretary-General before eventually becoming the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs—one of the highest-ranking positions ever attained by a Sierra Leonean at the UN. He also served as Secretary-General of the Second World Conference to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination, helping advance global efforts against racial injustice.

Following his retirement from the United Nations in 1994, Dr. Jonah continued serving his country as Sierra Leone's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (1996–1998) and later as Minister of Finance, Development and Economic Planning (1998–2001).

A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned a PhD in Political Science, Dr. Jonah is widely respected for his contributions to international diplomacy, conflict resolution, public administration, and the promotion of an independent and professional international civil service. His writings and reflections on UN reform continue to influence scholars and diplomats around the world.

Dr. James O.C. Jonah remains one of Sierra Leone's greatest ambassadors to the world—a symbol of excellence, integrity, and public service.
