Sport is a brutal, beautiful game of inches.
This weekend was a masterclass in this very concept.
In the World Series, inches on a slide kept the Toronto Blue Jays from capturing the title.
In the NYC Marathon, a slight lean, two tenths of a second, separated 1st from 2nd.
It's the magic and soul-crushing cost of being in the arena:
“Micro dosing” = adequate programming and organization, with adequate load, for microcycles in the competitive stage of the competitive period (as has existed in Sports Training for 50 or more years).
Seen a few practitioners post about education for athletes. While ed is important, setting up the environment to reduce friction for the athlete moves the needle. Present nutrition, recovery, skill acq, etc in a way that nudges intention & the 'right' decision from the athlete
We’re excited to welcome @Jessepgreen as our new Director of Performance Science (West Region Manager)!
Jesse brings over a decade of experience in elite sport environments across Australia (AFL) and the US (NBA, NHL, NCAA), with a background spanning S&C, sport science, return-to-play, and performance leadership
He’ll be based in the Bay Area, supporting teams and practitioners on the West Coast, helping our community in preparing their athletes for the next-level of performance 🤝
The play “multiple sports 🏈 ⚾️🏀⚽️” crowd, for better all around athletes, assumes that they are embedded in representative learning environments in all other disciplines. That get adequate reps (they don’t), are free to make mistakes (there not), and are allowed to explore different solutions (😂😂😂). It’s so over coached.
The flip side is if they were playing with friends, at the park or in the street, with no coaches or adults interrupting, and could spend hours playing (lots of repetition without repetition), and for the joy of playing, they would be much happier and better off.
I'm thrilled to announce I've accepted a new position for the Brown Bears football team (@BrownU_Football): Offensive Quality Control Assistant/Director of Skill Acquisition. Thank you to @BrownHCPerry and the university for this tremendous opportunity!
S&C coaches are quick to talk about how complex the human system is w periodization/adaptation but then go do ladder drills claiming they support more agile movers in sport (an even larger complex environment)
Can't be both ways
You need to let your athletes make mistakes.
The human brain works on error correction. Meaning we learn from mistakes.
Being perfect or practicing perfect repetitions isn’t how we’re meant to learn.
Be more dynamic & adaptable
Think IndyCar drivers just sit and steer?
200+ mph, no power steering, sweltering heat & adapting to every lap 🥵
It’s physically AND perceptually demanding

Great podcast on multiple fronts, but want to highlight near the back 1/3 when they talk about early specialization. Thought @hp_coach_sean hit it on the head with a more nuanced discussion that meets the athlete where they are instead of a one size fits all answer. 👏
