Yesterday we were celebrating 50 years of Title IX and all it made possible for female athletes, and today we have gone back in time and stripped millions of women of their reproductive autonomy. Being a woman in 2022 is quite a ride.
Following closures of 8 labor and delivery units throughout rural New Hampshire since 2000, the median driving time to the nearest open unit doubled among pregnant women living in these areas, and women in some areas now face extremely long travel times.
Reduced proximity to an open unit was also associated with an increased probability of giving birth en route to the hospital or having an unplanned home birth.

Great piece, including voices of those who lost Medicaid after pregnancy. "As you near the 60-day point, you think, ‘Oh my goodness, Medicaid is going to end. What am I going to do?’”
But a ton of credit goes to @emilyanneck and her colleagues at @ACOGAction who worked tirelessly to share that evidence and make the case for the extension. Well done, all!

And deeply proud to be part of the amazing research community that worked so hard to demonstrate the potential benefits of a postpartum Medicaid extension. Too many to name, but you know who you are!
I was an @urbaninstitute research assistant right out of college, and I loved it so much that I came back when I finished graduate school. Come work with us, and you might never want to leave!
Many uninsured new mothers are *already* eligible for Medicaid, and many more would become eligible with a postpartum extension. But almost one-third appear ineligible for any assistance, with immigration restrictions a key barrier. Lots of work to do to cover all mothers.
