A few takeaways so far from re-reading this book. Things they got right in 1995, that seem obvious now, but were anything but 31 years ago:

1. Freedom in China peaked in 1988.
2. Ongoing economic divides between rural and urban citizens even as the economy expands.
3. [The U.S.] has "not yet awakened to the potential strength of the Chinese economic challenge."
4. Economic growth in China would raise energy prices around the world and create additional pollution problems.
5. A strong motive for economic growth is to finance a far-reaching military buildup designed to destabilize Asia and push land and sea border claims.
6. Remain an oppressive government with a policy of "tranquility on the surface and repression on the inside," with no real interest in hiding this fact from the rest of the world.
