#breaking: Eiffel Tower staff went on strike on September 7, citing that BAPS had asked female workers to leave during an official visit. BAPS apologized in response.

A 100-person delegation from Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a global organization known for its temples, visited the French landmark on Saturday, September 5. 

Eiffel Tower staff union representative Diane Davoine said that this BAPS delegation asked women to move. “Women were asked to leave their places of work in order to place men there,” she told Reuters. 

“Tensions mounted over the weekend, so this morning, the employees decided to meet: first, to open a dialogue with management, and second, to ensure that women are never treated this way at the company again,” Davoine added. She said management had since apologized.

SETE, the company that operates the Eiffel Tower, told AFP that BAPS asked the visit to limit “interactions with women,” and added that “these conditions should not have been accepted.” 

BAPS wrote in a statement on X that it arranged the trip with SETE “at the start of normal opening hours to avoid disrupting or inconveniencing others.” 

“To the best of our knowledge, at no point was anyone prevented access to the Eiffel Tower,” BAPS wrote. “Nevertheless, we sincerely apologise for any pain or inconvenience caused.We believe in the universal values of mutual respect and service.”

On Sunday, BAPS inaugurated its first major temple in France, in a town right outside Paris, Bussy-Saint-Georges.

Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire said the city would investigate the incident. “I am taking note of the anger expressed by the employees of the Eiffel Tower, and I want to tell them that their discontent is legitimate,” Grégoire wrote on X.

“That absolutely does not go down well with the employees, with women obviously, who are all humiliated by what happened, by the way some were treated,” Davoine concluded.
