On January 7, 2021 the media pronounced President Trump inert, kaput, zapped.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐡𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐲 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞; 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦, 𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐚, 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞'𝐬 𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐭.

Bill Maher (@billmaher) has spent the better part of a decade branding Donald Trump a threat to the republic. On his own show Friday night, he told his liberal audience something they did not want to hear: "𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘮𝘱 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘣𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘴𝘴," Maher said, crediting the president's hardline governing style for 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲.

Maher wasn't handing Trump a total pass. He credited flock cameras tracking Americans block by block, and Democrats' own expanded safety net, for part of the decline. But he refused to pretend toughness played no role — and he said it on HBO, in front of a crowd that boos at Trump's name.

Then came the line even his own audience had to sit with. Maher didn't drop his objections entirely. He still called some of the administration's deportation practices the wrong move, pointing to migrants sent to countries they have no connection to. That caveat is the price of admission for staying in his own tribe's good graces — and he paid it before delivering the real headline.

The caveat didn't survive the moment. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐩 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 just told his own audience, on the record, that 𝐭𝐡𝐞 '𝐛𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐬𝐬' 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 — while, in Maher's own words, the bad guys got the message your local news anchor still won't say out loud.

This was an unexpected moment.

Bill Maher spent one of the final minutes of his show heaping massive praise on President Trump for taking a sledgehammer to crime.

“Trump is a BADASS!”

Maher’s point was that although he doesn’t agree with all of Trump’s methods on crime, anyone who denies that Trump is having an effect on crime is being “childish.”

MAHER: “Is doing it this way the right thing? No.”

“But it’s just childish to pretend that when you elect a ‘F*ck around and find out’ president, a no more Mr. nice guy, boot in your ass, V for Vendetta, kick ass and take names, ‘say hello to my little friend’ president, that that’s not gonna have some effect on crime.”

“He has UFC fights on the lawn. I think the bad guys got the message!”

Maher may disagree with Trump on plenty of things, but even he seems to recognize something a lot of people on the left refuse to admit...projecting strength and making criminals believe there will be consequences can have an effect.

“Trump is a BADASS.”

That coming from Bill Maher is pretty damn wild.
