@pmarca There’s no art without introspection. I get that excessive introspection leads to overthinking and paralysis. But ‘zero introspection’ tips into the opposite extreme. Selective introspection (fuel for art and relationships, off when it’s time to do) feels like the sweet spot
@AbelowRob Most people outside the music industry think music is free. Someone once asked me, ‘How can Spotify charge as much as Netflix? It’s just music.
Anyone who works in the music industry is crazy.
The hours are long.
The competition is stiff.
The work can be thankless.
The reality is the road is harder here than other sectors.
But...music hits different.
It has emotional & connective & cultural value that's hard to measure.
If you're here, you want to help artists & be part of something that brings people together. At least that's what brought you here in the 1st place.
Don't lose that.
Don't let it get exploited.
And enjoy the wins when the come.
Over 200 musicians are calling on generative AI developers & platforms to cease the use of AI to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.
"Some of the biggest and most powerful companies are, without permission, using our work to train AI models."
Bad actors who show no regard for artists & their work must be stopped - asking forgiveness later is not an option.
Incentivize those doing it the right way:
1. Licensing
2. Attribution
3. Compensation
4. Transparency
5. Opt-out
"Unchecked, AI will set in motion a race to the bottom that will degrade the value of our work and prevenut us from being fairly compensated for it. This assault on human creativity must be stopped. We must protect against the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists' voices and likenesses, violate creators' rights, and destroy the music ecosystem."
Here's the full list of artists:
You wouldn't expect a $1M loan with no credit score, right? The same goes for getting reach on DSPs and landing spots on big editorial playlists. You need to prove you're serious about your craft. Consistency, discipline, and volume - that's our new “music credit score”
More artists are succeeding and, as a result, even more are interested in becoming artists. Sure, more than 10 million uploaders have at least a single track on Spotify, but over 8 million of them have released fewer than even 10 tracks all-time. When it comes to building financial opportunities, we’re focused on those most dependent on streaming as part of their livelihood: these 225,000 emerging and professional artists that are building careers in music.
The future of entrepreneurship:
1) Creatorpreneurs (biz co-founded with creators)
2) Micropreneurs (biz with 10 employees or less)
3) Solopreneurs (solo biz)
4) Multipreneurs (company that makes multiple companies)
All of these businesses focus on cash-flow and impact.
Once you have a business that has cash-flow, you never look back.
Valuation isn't the focus. Raising VC isn't the focus.
Entrepreneurship is evolving.
Marketing is important, but it’s not above everything.
Nothing is free. Music has value, and remember:
If you’re not paying for the product, you are the product.
My view on TikTok vs Universal:
Let me ask you this: if you were a restaurant owner, would you give free food forever to any influencer that comes into your place in exchange for promotion?
TikTok is like an influencer who goes to a restaurant and thinks he shouldn’t pay for the food because he is ‘promoting’ the restaurant.
Of course, you can do marketing and promotion agreements, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have free food forever.
All the music in the world for $10.99 is the best deal on planet earth. If you are complaining about a $1 jump, I have no patience for you.
You are not entitled to the work & inspiration of the world's artists without providing them a fraction of a penny.
You underpay.
