What I find truly wild about this story is that, in the fifth year of the largest European war since World War II, so many people still seem to believe that an aggressor committing mass war crimes daily should, for some reason, enjoy calm and immunity from any retaliation, and that Ukraine potentially disrupting air traffic around Moscow is somehow completely wild.

Especially when, as the article itself makes clear, the idea obviously ruled out posing any direct threat to civilian aircraft and only envisaged setting conditions for rendering air traffic impossible for Moscow.

This is assuming that Cofnas really is on the brink of being fired by Ghent U, as he's reported: the real test for higher ed now (which I think the profession will fail) is whether any of the unis which have said that they support academic freedom and "viewpoint diversity" will swoop in and hire Cofnas. Doing so would establish that reporting fraud is not a career-ending move.
Whereas, if nobody does it, then the clear precedent being established is if you're an academic who suspects fraud, you should shut up about it, or else you'll be fired.

Zohran Mamdani has been mayor for 231 days and this, if manifested, and without hyperbole, will be the most radical act of his tenure by a long shot.

Please allow me to break this down:

He is about to spend 70 million tax dollars on 5 government run grocery stores (notwithstanding Aldi' making clear they could open 5 stores for a fraction of that).

Those five stores, run as they will be on tax dollars every single month no matter how full or empty their aisles will be, will be able to operate at a loss in perpetuity, and offer groceries for 30% less than their competitors.

But because no private grocer could possibly compete with a government competitor undercutting them by 30%, they will all inevitably all go bankrupt.

Mamdani's solution to prevent their bankruptcy? Give those private grocers tax dollars for them to compete and thereby make up for the 30% shortfall that...HE CREATED.

Succinctly: the government spends tax dollars to create an insanely bad problem. Then, to solve the problem that THEY CREATED, the government spends more tax dollars.

Utterly insane.

Jedna obecnější poznámka k nedávné "akademické bouři". Pokud byste se mne ptali, kde se táhne hlavní dělící linie v sociálních vědách, řekl bych, že leží mezi těmi, kteří systematicky formulují (a ověřují) kontrafaktuální tvrzení ("kdyby bylo něco na vstupu jinak, co by se změnilo na výstupu") a těmi, kdo takto uvažovat odmítají/nechtějí.
Do značné míry to je spor mezi "naturalistickými přístupy" a "reflektivisty" (populárně postmodernisty).

Hezky to vystihl svého času Krugman (2011, s. 3–4):
„… what mainstream economists want is the ability to answer ‚what if ‘ questions: if something were different, how would that change the economic outcomes?“ „When a mainstream economist encounters a (dosaďte si obor dle libosti) paper, he or she tends to skim through it looking for the results that can be brought to bear, directly or indirectly, on ‚what if ‘ questions – and all too often finds nothing along those lines.“

Obecně platí, že ekonomové mají k těm kontrafaktuálním otázkám nejblíže, ale najdeme třeba i velké části politické vědy a sociologie, které uvažují velmi podobně (byť třeba s menším důrazem na univerzálnost teorií - tedy nepožadují tak velkou zobecnitelnost).

Mimochodem, rozdělení na "naturalisty" a "reflektivisty" není primárně otázkou politické pozice výzkumníků. Je sice pravda, že postmoderně orientovaní autoři bývají obecně více nalevo, ale řada levicově orientovaných výzkumníků patří mezi prominentní "naturalisty".

Stejně tak nejde jednoduše říci, že by všichni autoři využívající kvalitativní metody odmítali řešit ony kontrafaktuální otázky (zde je opět rozdíl mezi kvalitativními metodami naturalistů a reflektivistů - žel většina laiků netuší, že jde o velmi odlišné přístupy).

Přitom ten příkop mezi naturalisty a reflektivisty je opravdu zásadní. Naturalisticky orientovaný výzkumník-politolog (zejména když je kvantitativně zdatný) může klidně více číst a citovat třeba AER (celkem významný ekonomický časopis) než postmoderně orientovaný politologický časopis.

Proč je ten příkop tak hluboký? Protože oba tábory mají výrazně odlišnou představu o tom, jak správně dělat vědu/výzkum (co je poznatelné, co není a jak se k tomu dobrat) a co vůbec má být cílem vědy. Ale to by již bylo na jinou diskusi.

- Get real stuff in return for money you print
- Control world banking
- Can run deficits with relatively low inflation
- Imported stuff is cheap
- Capital is very easy to access
- World is invested in your economy working
- You can afford a military that is orders of magnitude bigger than anyone else’s

The US can essentially run the global world order in its own interests, so long as it maintains relative advantages for countries that buy into that system via security, stability, and free trade

There is a real disadvantage in the competitiveness of low-tech manufacturing exports, but we’re many economic revolutions removed from the Industrial Revolution… and the US will never again be an industrial powerhouse in the traditional sense. Even if we decouple from Asia, we will outsource most low-tech manufacturing to Latin and South America

It’s an “exorbitant privilege,” but people like JD Vance can’t see that because they view the economy through the prism of growing up in Appalachia. While I understand how people disadvantaged by the system would have a problem, they are still a relatively small portion of the economy. The alternative would be disastrous for a country built around a system of its own creation

Skandal v Britanii kolem Jasona Ardaye je famozni. Tenhle chlapek, podle vseho klasickej hustler a pohadkar, kolem sebe tak dlouho vrsil lzi, ktery chteli lidi slyset, az se prolhal k profesure na Cambridge.

Pomohlo primarne to, ze celej establishment chtel prvniho cernyho profesora. BBC o nem tocila dokumenty, vychazely o nem oslavny clanky a v kazdym si Arday jeste pridal. Ze byl autista, kterej se naucil cist pozde, Ze byl zazracny dite. Atd… woke jitrnice z akademickyho prostredi mu to zraly i z navijakem. A nektery ho branej dodneska. Kdyz to na Ardaye prasklo, do posledni chvile kricel “rasismus!”

Miluju samozrejme vsechny ty lidi, ktery se tu se mnou behem let hadali o tom, ze progleft prece neovlada zapadni univerzity (ja nezapominam @dan_prokop, i kdyz vy mozna jo🤣🤣) ze progleft nema vlastne zadnej vliv na establishment a vsechno to o tom levicovym biasu v akademii i jinde jsou alt-right halucinace.

Mimochodem, kdyz to na Ardaye zacalo praskat, (diky novinari z Timesu) nevahal ani chvili a podal na novinare neco jako trestni oznameni. Policie ho nasledne (ano, toho novinare) nekolik mesicu vysetrovala pro udajne obtezovani. (Rasove motovovane ofkoz).

Mne (neironicky) fascinujou vsechny ty probehy obsahujici mentalisty, podvodniky, manipulatory, predstirace , doppelgangery, hustlery a podobny typy schopny oblbnout svoje okoli. Ale teda musim rict, ze ta forma “race-hustlingu” co probihala poslednich deset let byla az moc jednoducha….
