Black children are not verbally deprived; Code switching shows a deep understanding of language. Myth 13 is rooted in prejudice and racism. #fa25e211o2
A lot of these myths stem from fear of change, i've noticed. Evolution of language is important so that we can keep up with the complexities of this world! #fa25e211o2
@kyroosgf When you research sign languages, its so cool to see the similarities and differences across the world! I recommend looking at ASL and BSL alphabet differences!
The possibilities of semantics are kind of endless which makes it enjoyable to learn about. It changes the way you listen to people and think during conversations! #fa25e211o2
@kyroosgf It was one of my favorite things to think about while learning about semantics! Being the heart of a project (like the center or idea of) and the literal heart organ is another one! #fa25e211o2
The "How Semantics Works" video was a nice review and super easy to digest (digest being used as understand rather than the bodily process #semantics) #fa25e211o2
@OryahOryah9 I agree that the language has loads of history, but I still agree that it is a chaotic language with many different rules that are only true sometimes. ie: "i before e except after c" weird, science, leisure, etc. Its okay to be chaotic!
While I agree that English has a lot of culture and mixed languages, sometimes I agree that the spelling is"kattastroffic." There are a lot of rules that counter each other or that are only true sometimes. It's okay to be "kattastroffic!" #fa25e211o2
Myth 6 spoke about one of my biggest pet peeves...I'm glad that it was labeled a myth and the author brought great counter arguments. Women don't talk too much, men are just disinterested! The fact is that some people talk more than others, regardless of gender. #fa25e211o2
@Nathalym418 I also believe that the way they write is a respectable trade! I believe people more so criticize the use of language they are unfamiliar with and how journalism can widespread the use!
Myth 3 interested me the most. I found it interesting that people believe spreading different ways of using language is "ruining it." It tied back to myth 1 for me because people are scared of change when it comes to language. #fa25e211o2
Circling back to the TED talk, the quote that stood out to me was "To know a second language is to have a second soul" (I apologize if its not the exact quote). It shows that language can really make up who we are as people #fa25e211o2
