@caitlinoakes_ I completely agree. I would like to use this garden as a stimulus for cross-curricular learning wherever I can! Thank you for your ideas!
On this platform I’ve been discussing and researching kitchen gardens in schools to teach students about responsible production but now I want to hear from everyone! What do you think? What are your ideas about gardens in schools? It’s important to reflect and learn! #UoNTeach
Outdoor learning is such a powerful teaching tool. It allows students to become connected to the natural world and allows them to understand and appreciate what they have. Outdoor learning will be a key focus for my unit of work! #UoNTeach
Dolan (2015) looks at the importance of learning outside of the classroom in the physical world. Students can touch, feel and learn with physical materials and environments. This concept of outdoor learning will be the main focus for my upcoming school project #UoNTeach
@amelia_hughes25 This book looks perfect for discussing self-confidence! If you are interested I love the book 'I Am Enough' by Grace Byers. The book tackles big topics such as loving who you are and respecting others and would be a great resource for students from different cultural backgrounds.
@caitlinoakes_ Thanks for sharing this! I was never aware that clean away offered services such as this. Will you be using this in your unit of work and what KLA would you use this incursion for?
I love this resource! It is a great little whiteboard animation that teaches students all about sustainable practices and would make for great stimulus for a creative arts lesson on sketching and drawing. Thank you for sharing!
https://t.co/FN4qwjDIFK What a cool whiteboard animation this class has made! In my classroom I would love to get Ss to create their own animations or videos on the topic of #sustainability that they can show to the rest of the class or even to the rest of the school. #UoNTeach
School gardens provide students with an opportunity to get outside and learn through practice. My unit of work will have a key focus on getting students outside with their peers and community to learn about how together as a community we can take care of our earth. #UoNTeach
Who doesn’t love class outside?! A school garden is the perfect opportunity for outdoor learning and allows students the opportunity to experience real world interactions with their peers, the community and the planet (Dolan, 2015) #UoNTeach
Schaps (2003) discusses the need for students to be connected to their community in order for quality education to occur and this could be achieved through a gardening day! Families can come together with local experts to have a day of gardening and fun outside! #UoNTeach
Jeanette Winter's 'Our House Is on Fire: Greta Thunberg's Call to Save the Planet' is an eye-opening picture book that would be great for stage 3. I want to use this book to start some great discussions on sustainability and what we can do to help in class! #UonTeach
@MorgynFrench I love this idea! Videos are also a great way for students to learn about recycling from the comfort of their own homes during this uncertain time. I thought I would share this video about recycling which is great for younger students! https://t.co/54fMeQ2GtA
@EliseCl71487828@Bunnings@SAKGF Thanks so much! this was definitely a great read and I like their philosophy on gardening in schools, very inspiring. I will have to use this as a resource in my unit of work. Thanks for sharing!
Do you want to implement a kitchen garden at your school? Have a chat to your local @Bunnings! They provide hands on assistance with diy projects such as building gardens and provide students with information on how to care for the garden! #UoNTeach
@sophie_obrien4@Bunnings It’s a great idea and I would be very curious to know the cost. An important job for implementing this project would be having a phone call with Bunnings to discuss all the costs but this could always be assited buy a fun school community fundraiser!
Experiments dont just teach scientific skills but they also allow students to explore the world of science! Experiments like these are great as they teach kids about responsible consumption while still being fun! Check out this great resource @caitlinoakes_ shared! #UoNTeach
There is no better way to learn about composting then by getting your hands dirty! Experiments are hands-on, fun and engaging ways for students to learn the science behind composting, while also being #sustainable and helping the environment. #UoNTeach

The local community in Point Clare created a community garden to allow for local residents to learn how to responsibly produce vegetables together! I think it would be a great idea to get locals to come in to schools and show students how to do the same. #UoNTeach
@GoodacreCooper@Bunnings Thanks for that @GoodacreCooper! It’s definitely an interesting read and I’m impressed by their unique approach to talking about sustainability!
@piercy_madison These look great! Another thing you could try is collecting your studnets pencil shavings and adding them to the compost. Less mess and reducing waste!
The benefits of recycling are endless! Using compost in school gardens teaches students about what plants need to thrive and grow but also shows students how their recycling can make a difference. Teach kids to take care of the earth! #EDUC4750#Sustainability
