@ASHP_EmergSci My generation had an advantage when coming out of school - we grew up on computers. Your generation has a similar opportunity with AI. Play with AI chatbots and tools. Learn good and bad uses. This foundational experience will be essential to navigating applications to medicine.
@ASHP_EmergSci There is always a lag between innovation and widespread adoption. Adoption requires infrastructure. With AI, we are in that gap, AI is available everywhere on the internet, but nowhere to be found in healthcare. But infrastructure is comingโฆand so will widespread adoption
@ASHP_EmergSci Accountability. No matter what tools I use, I am responsible for my work.
Also, transparency / integrity. I feel no shame for using AI tools safely in appropriate situations. But give credit where credit is due.
@ASHP_EmergSci Health systems are moving towards AI review committees - https://t.co/TjnROkqlTK. Pharmacy leaders need to make sure pharmacy is involved. Others should advocate to their leaders about the importance of pharmacy representation.
Speaking of, what are we doing @RWJBHPharmacy?
@ASHP_EmergSci - Bias: AI tools learn from data, biases in the data = biases in the output
- Inaccuracy / hallucination: Sometimes theyโre wrong
- Decay: Good performance today does not mean good performance tomorrow
- Privacy / Security: we must protect patient info
@ASHP_EmergSci Break down the AMS job into tasks. For prospective audit and feedback:
- Screening patient charts: inefficient and time-consuming
- Intervening: improves patient outcomes.
Hand #1 to AI and spend more time on #2. Dramatically improve reach and impact.
@ASHP_EmergSci Start with the terms below. Then, my favorite resource atm is here: https://t.co/JVYZmRH9Pl, 1 hr course, bite-sized portions.
And a great, more pharmacy-specific resource is here: https://t.co/h9A7imQMnP
Big for #COVID19 therapy: the compassionate use results for remdesivir in 53 patients looks very encouraging, especially in very sick patients on mechanical ventilation with 18% fatality (only, expect > 50%) and overall 68% improvement https://t.co/oP8eDK6jYL @NEJM
