I get DEI is not in vogue these days but Grace Hopper being canceled due to lack of funds marks a sad day for women in engineering.

Congrats to the “conservatives” who have ushered in an era of:
-A pro-Putin administration;
-Superpower suicide;
-Crony socialism;
-live-streamed executions;
-losing a war to Iran;
-unprecedented corruption;
-vindictive prosecutions;
-A disastrous economy for the working class.
“I think of Sarah Longwell as a kind of political sin-eater. The founder and publisher of The Bulwark sprinkles quotes like the above throughout her new book, a New York Times bestseller, How to Eat an Elephant: One Voter at a Time. She listens to the most infuriating inanities from the world’s most irresponsible voters because the rest of us would be driven to madness from the Lovecraftian horror that is American public opinion.”

A lot of what Trump has done can be undone the minute he’s gone. THIS, however, cannot: the fact that all of America's allies now know that in any four year period, a single man can rip up all treaties, social norms, and economic partnerships.
America is no longer a country they can trust.
America is no longer a country with which long-term deals can be made.
America is no longer a country that prioritizes peace.
Most countries will likely grow their military as a result.
Most countries will likely make deals with other countries as a result.
This damage will likely take more than a generation to START to be undone, if ever.
And THAT will be MAGA’s legacy.
I’m no supporter of Donald Trump, but I’ll give him this: he’s held up a mirror to society and revealed just how many people put hatred, bigotry, and self-interest above compassion and decency. What shocks me most is how many now wear it proudly.
@Brewjew308 "What would you say if we had evidence that you were cooking ridiculously greasy, yet irresistibly delicious tacos?"
Jack Smith: "Um, that's Jack in the Box."
Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined
Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending
This is what Trump voters did to the USA.
They were bored with the ease and civility of modern life - and angry that people who didn’t look like them also got to enjoy it.
So they trashed everything our forefathers had built over generations while screaming “fuck your feelings.” They set fire to their own house to own the libs.
Now they cry on TikTok about the outrageous price of diesel, or their family farms going bankrupt, or not being able to afford healthcare… and they want us to feel sympathy for them.
Yet, given the opportunity, they’d wreck everything all over again. They’ve learned nothing, and they never will, because learning requires humility. Learning requires a willingness to understand when you’re wrong.

In the 70’s, Carter put solar panels on the White House. Reagan ripped them down.
Biden passed legislation to invest in renewable energy. Trump overturned it.
Republicans have been pushing coal and oil since the 70’s.
Australia started to invest in renewable clean energy. Today Australians are receiving FREE energy.
Vote Republicans out.
Fei-Fei Li spent years hand-labeling 14 million images, gave the entire thing away for free, and watched it create a multi-trillion dollar industry that paid her nothing. Sixteen years later, AMD is finally paying her. $8.2 billion.
Rewind to 2007. She's a junior professor at Princeton, and the field's consensus is that progress comes from better algorithms, with data as an afterthought. Colleagues warn her that building a giant image dataset will kill her career. Money gets so tight she considers reopening her family's dry cleaning business in New Jersey, the same one she ran on weekends as a Princeton undergrad, to fund the project.
She builds ImageNet anyway and releases it free in 2009.
For three years, almost nothing happens. Then in 2012, two of Geoffrey Hinton's students train a neural net on a pair of $500 gaming GPUs and enter her competition. AlexNet drops the error rate from 26% to 15%, and that single result convinces the whole field that deep learning works.
Nvidia was a gaming chip company worth about $8 billion that day. It's worth over $5 trillion now, and the run started with two of its consumer cards winning a contest built on Fei-Fei's free dataset.
The entire industry monetized the wave except the person who started it. She stayed a professor.
Then in April 2024, at 47, she finally starts a company. Paul's math above puts the four co-founders' share at roughly $3.4 billion after just 2.5 years, call it $850 million each. And she walks into AMD as Chief Scientist reporting to Lisa Su, which puts the two most important women in AI inside the same company.
ImageNet made everybody in this business rich. It just took sixteen years to get around to her.
The horror of the @Cornell rape story is almost too much to grapple with. A woman being gang raped for 7 hours, the rapists not being arrested and excused by the university and a group text issued to the fraternity to join the abominable crime and not one of the recipients of the text called the police.
If there is ever the evidence we needed of an utter display of moral rot this is it.
THE “WORST OF THE WORST”: A NUN WITH A WORK PERMIT.
Sleep peacefully, America. ICE caught Sister Leticia Ugboaja walking to Sunday Mass.
She had a valid work permit, attended EVERY required immigration appointment and complied with EVERY condition of her court-ordered protection.
A nun. A nurse. Following the rules. Walking to church.
Thank God they got to her before she could receive Communion.
It took intervention from members of Congress to help secure her release. Apparently, a work permit and doing everything immigration officials require aren’t quite as effective as knowing someone in Congress.
So much for “do it the right way" hey MAGA????
ICE: protecting America from the terrifying threat of a nurse with a rosary.
