IP reputation isn’t the only factor, sure, but for most people who’ll be self-hosting on a standard VPS, it’s a major one to contend with.

Shared IPs are often already tainted from previous tenants, and even dedicated clean IPs require warming, consistent volume, and ongoing monitoring to stay out of spam. Especially if you’re hosting on behalf of clients you can’t necessarily control.

The rest of the OpenShip stack feels low-maintenance, which is great, but email deliverability is not and I think your marketing suggests it’s effortless.

With email, you have real overhead - watching blacklists, handling bounces, tuning content, and dealing with the warm-up period. Choice is great, and I’m glad it works well for your products, but the ‘just add a few DNS records and you’re ready to go / no deep infrastructure work’ framing makes self-hosted email sound comparably effortless to the app deployment side which I think is counter productive to a large audience who your tool would appeal to is all.

I am old and was around for Sun's demise. Aravind's reasoning is 100% true. Sun sold web servers that cost a million dollars each, with expensive services wrapped around them. They could do incredible things small Linux servers could not. For example, you could hot swap cards out of a Sun server WHILE it was running.

But a fully loaded Linux web server cost maybe $10,000, so you could buy ten and still save 90%. People rushed for the cheap Linux boxes. Sun tried to adapt, but the whole org was built around million-dollar servers. They just couldn't change. This all happened very quickly, about two years if I recall correctly.

Lots of parallels to expensive cloud AI and local AI. If Kimi K3 ships open weights as promised, you could run it on a couple of future Mac M5 or M6 or M7 systems (whatever ends up shipping) for maybe $50,000.

And local AI is the worst it will ever be today. Think where it is in two years. I don't think Fable 5 at $50/MTok output is sustainable.

@JackEllis Thank you! Yeah that’s brutal - I mean it’s the other side of open source, right? WP Engine offer a product that does very well and has its place in the market. Sure it might go against some of the core values of Matt & Co, but they offer a product that people see an appeal in.
