Senior Scientist @ECMWF working for better weather and climate predictions. Special interest in the Arctic and sea ice. Views my own. @[email protected]
Dear friends, colleagues, followers. I'm leaving this platform. I'll keep the account open as a signpost, but please don't expect any activity. My new home is on #Mastodon as @[email protected] - I'd love to reconnect with y'all in the #Fediverse ! 🖖
In focus: find out how our global numerical model has evolved from atmosphere only to encompass the Earth system as a whole. This #EarthSystem approach underpins all our forecasts and has opened up the development of a range of environmental services. https://t.co/5livrm14No
Exciting news: on the new @Atos supercomputer currently being installed in Bologna in @RegioneER, the next upgrade of the ensemble forecasts will bring them to 9km, same resolution of our high resolution forecast.
KEPLER are hosting an online open workshop on #Maritime and Research Sector Needs on Wednesday 19th May 2021.

Today #WorldMetDay2021 focuses on the ocean, our climate and weather. Read more about the importance of #oceanscience in weather prediction and the development of new forecast products, including for extreme marine events: https://t.co/zmGdG69zW2
New research article: Year-round impact of winter #SeaIceThickness observations on #SeasonalForecasts. The authors find that the memory of spring sea ice initial conditions lasts into autumn forecasts. https://t.co/04qk7nFcuD @bbs_climate@stietsche @PRosnay
The agenda for KEPLER's ASSW workshop, 'Enhancing #Copernicus 2.0 information products through
optimised usage of in-situ data' is now available.

Exciting! Its Molniya orbit is the high-latitude equivalent of a geostationary orbit and allows Arctic observations with high temporal resolution. Does anyone know whether and where data will be openly available?
ECMWF Council today selected Bonn to host the Centre’s new and third site. Blown away by the quality of all nine proposals. Grateful for Member States support. Excited by this new phase in scientific collaboration. #OneECMWF
I’m very pleased to be able to introduce our new ArctiCONNECT project (@arctic_connect) recently funded by @NERCScience, which aims to transform understanding of the effects of rapid Arctic warming on European climate and extreme weather (1/5)
I wonder if people know how fragile the climate modelling infrastructure that supports the CMIP process really is? Love it or hate it, ESGF is supported by grant funding, not operational funding, and that funding is at risk: https://t.co/ghiThZewGv
@ECMWF is 45 years old today! A lot has been achieved in these years thanks to @ECMWF staff and the vision and support of @ECMWF Member and Co-operating States https://t.co/RNQ7Z7Ghtv
A record-breaking expedition ends: Never before had an icebreaker ventured so far north during Arctic winter, never before could researchers gather such urgently needed climate data in the region hardest hit by climate change (tr) #welcomePolarstern ➡️ https://t.co/75HhAmasbT
UK scientists create music from climate simulations. Listen to the beautiful piece "Arctic Ocean Canon": https://t.co/DJ7aUxOCN5 @PlymouthMarine

A year ago, #RVPolarstern left Tromsø to start not only her largest expedition ever - but the most exciting one for many of us: @MOSAiCArctic! Today, exactly one year later, she left her second home floe over the course of the year to sail finally back to Bremerhaven @AWI_Media
