During Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week, I want to address an uncomfortable but crucial truth because it makes me want to bang my head against the wall most days…
While shocking headlines about abuse cases may capture our attention, the most important lesson often gets overlooked: perpetrators of child sexual abuse are rarely strangers. They are typically people known to the child.
Take the recent case in France - before the extent of his crimes were discovered, the first report came from a 6-year-old neighbour. https://t.co/WFiwWVj3SW
As uncomfortable as this reality makes us feel, acknowledging that perpetrators are not ‘over there’ but here - hiding in plain sight, is essential for prevention. We must:
- Learn to recognise warning signs
- Create environments where children feel safe to speak up
- Listen and believe children when they do
- Have age-appropriate conversations about body safety
- Question situations that don't ‘feel’ right
- Speak openly about this issue to help break the societal stigma and encourage more people to speak out about their abuse
Most perpetrators of child sexual abuse will likely someone’s family member. If they are sexually abusing outside of their family networks, it stands to reason they will be drawn to children within them.
According to another article, “members of his own family also knew of Le Scouarnec’s pa*do*hili* but failed to stop him” (BBC News)

"Depp planted a flag, not only for himself, but for men who have been wrongly accused across the country... he galvanized an army of new fans—both men and women—who were inspired by his bravery and willingness to confront and combat the false allegations made against him."
@Izze1122 Someone didn't live through the 80s? Guys wearing shirts that showed their abs was normal. The character was also described as a jock which explains the whole outfit.
I started advocacy because I didn’t think people knew what happens when a child reports abuse. I found out many don’t, but the professionals in the system do know - they either think this is the way it should be or they have to deal with those people.

"If we keep allowing our perception of what mental illness looks like to dictate how we go about recognizing and treating it, we will continue to overlook people who don't fit the mold." From @Upworthy: https://t.co/6evMCnQBOk
Sexual abuse & assault can poison our beliefs about our body. It can condition us to believe our worth is in the physical pleasure we can provide others— and that our body is not ours to do with as we prefer.
