The historical function of the two-party system in the United States has always been to block the emergence of a mass socialist party that posed the slightest threat to capitalist interests. It is not the rather milquetoast program of Mamdani, who works within the framework of the Democratic Party, that frightens them. It is that his victory reveals that socialism is not anathema to Americans, and that it is capable to acquiring mass support -- and probably in a far more radical form. The specter of a third socialist party, with a mass base, that advocates not merely free bus rides but also nationalizations and expropriations, haunts the corporate-financial oligarchy.
