Private ownership isn’t enough to be capitalist, having the freedom to do with it as one wishes is also necessary, and govt regs are most certainly a restriction on how one uses their property

The crown dictated trade laws, but the colonists were generally free to conduct affairs freely within the colony. Govt control was weak

The idea of capitalism, ie private actors free to act independently, started to emerge in the renaissance period. The American colonies were effectively capitalist (though not fully),with early US being less free but still very close

@RyanSausageEsq @charliekirk11 Free markets are the most important characteristic of capitalism. Crony capitalism is something entirely different. Which really isn’t a developed idea. The US is best described as mercantilist. I don’t know enough about Russia to have an opinion. But I know it’s not capitalist
