For the most part this is true. Casual viewers of the show don’t actually care about the ships/niche fandom content. However, most people I’ve interacted with HAVE heard of it!! Would not call it a niche show overall.

The problem with some Supernatural fans is they’re chronically online. So they don’t realise that it is still quite a niche show that did moderately well worldwide.

Most people I speak to know Jensen from the Boys, Jared they may know from Gilmore Girls; Misha they don’t know.
