Thiruvasagam is a collection of 658 divine Tamil poems composed by Manikkavasagar Tamil poet from 2nd century. It is said that Lord Nataraja himself wrote it down on the sacred day of Aani Ahilyam.
There is a belief that when the world ends, it will first perish by water through a great tsunami. But even that water will be evaporated by Vadavamukha Agni, the fierce underwater fire said to dwell deep beneath the southern ocean.
Then, that Agni will be extinguished by air, and the air will merge and dissolve into the infinite sky.
And in the end, only one element remains, the sky, Akasham. Vast, formless, eternal.
This element is symbolised by none other than Lord Nataraja of Chidambaram.
They say he had Thiruvasagam written down by himself so he could read it when only he remains, when even Adhiparashakti has merged back into him.
Manikkavasagar was 32 years old on the day of Aani month’s Ahilyam star. On that sacred day, Lord Nataraja came to Tillai, now called Chidambaram. In front of the north tower, there was a small temple. This place is known as Thiruperundurai.
There, Shiva Peruman appeared in the form of an old Brahmin. He stood next to Manikkavasagar, who was seated, and gently asked him to narrate his songs.
As Manikkavasagar began to sing, the disguised Shiva Peruman, the old Brahmin, listened silently and started writing rapidly without ever asking him to repeat. It was Nataraja himself, standing there and writing down every word.
He wrote down all 658 songs including Shiva Puranam, the lengthy preface. He then organised the songs into sections. The longer ones were grouped under Munnurai, the preface section, which included Shivapuranam (1), Keerthi Thiruagaval, Thiruvandappagudi, Potri Thiruagaval, Thiruchadagam (100 songs), Neethal Vinappam (50 songs), Thiruvembavai (20 songs), Thiruambalai (20 songs), Thirupurchinnam (20 songs), and Pathigams (10 songs). The shorter songs were placed at the end. A total of 51 categories.
Shiva Peruman placed the entire collection in the sacred sanctum of the Thillai Temple. The next day, when the priests opened the inner chamber, they found bundles of neatly written palm-leaf scrolls.
At the end, Shiva had signed the work:
Narrated by Manikkavasagar, written by the beautiful Thiru Chidambalam.
Manikkavasagar came again, full of love and devotion for Shiva Peruman. The priests asked him,
What is the meaning of Thiruvasagam?
He replied,
Nataraja himself
and with that, the 32-year-old simply vanished into thin air.
Years later, the temple priests began to argue among themselves about who had ownership over the sacred palm-leaf scrolls. In the middle of this conflict, one of them threw the entire bundle into the temple tank, the sacred Shiva Ganga Theertham.
Much later, it was discovered and retrieved by the pontiff of Ambalathadi Iyer Madam. From then on, every Shivaratri, the scrolls are taken out and worshipped, and the public is allowed to witness this divine treasure.
Manikkavasagar was only 32 when he disappeared, but his words, his devotion, and the essence of Thiruvasagam live on forever.
