Musician, lapsed mediaevalist, liturgist, schoolmaster, pilot, beagler, occasional mathematician, part-time pedant and geek. Also an actual (lay) succentor.
@DominicSelwood@RobertePotente @melibeus1 @BLMedieval Sorry Dominic I’ve nearly given up twitter but - they are ‘h quadratum’ (B natural) and ‘b rotundum’ (B flat) both required by the hexachord system. Take a look at stuff on this. With both it is possible to play all scales of the period.
@IanYorston@BitbyBot@miss_mcinerney There’s a nice use of maths, though: the smaller the aeroplane, the larger the numbers used, until below a certain size it is mandatory to weigh everyone.
@SimonG54@nicholsonorgans There was an organ in Austria which had one labelled 'Rauschwerk' - this being both the term for reeds and a pun on 'rausch' which I believe means drunk...
Dear Twitter friends,
I’ve decided to give up Twitter for Lent.
I may have to operate on various work accounts, but I won’t be reading or tweeting on this account from midnight tonight, until Sunday 4th April.
I might find I don’t miss it... let’s see!
It’s time to say farewell to our old organ, which has been in daily use since 1980 - @nicholsonorgans carefully removing the pipework (some of which will be reused in future projects).

@jonathanclinch It actually handles the prelude pretty well. I’m going to record it for one of our online chapel services. I’ll need a registrant, though... handily I have one at home.
The liturgy for Quinquagesima marked the approach of meatless Lent with a passage from Genesis: 'Dixit dominus ad Noe, finis universae carnis venit', 'The Lord said to Noah, The end of all flesh is come'. A solemn reminder of human frailty, but also a bit of a liturgical joke...
#organselfie in a rather chilly St James’s Church, Radley.
But very grateful to have somewhere to practice now our @RadleyMusic organ is being removed.
@DrJACameron@QuireMemes We know Spem was inspired by an Italian 40 part motet. We suspect it might have been Ecce beatam lucem, although if so, I don’t think Tallis had heard it because the handling of the parts is so different.
I conducted some of the sub choirs on this:
