There is something called as Open closed principle that I recently came across.
It means ke the code should be open for extensions and closed for modifications.. And this is why design patterns were introduced.

There's a popular eg. for Abstract design pattern: The win+mac UI buttons. If the UI contains: a button... earlier: they'd code it like:
