VIDEO | Union Budget 2026: With over Rs 1.52 lakh crore of customs duty locked in litigations, the government could look at the possibility of an amnesty scheme in the Budget for 2026-27 to provide certainty to businesses, Price Waterhouse & Co has said.

The government could also look at rationalising customs duty rates by reducing the number of slabs to just 5 or 6, from the current 8-slab structure, to address the inverted duty structure in light of the free trade agreements (FTAs) that India has signed with various countries and blocs, Price Waterhouse & Co LLP, Principal, Gautam Khattar, told PTI.

In a significant win for religious sanctity of Jains, the Hon’ble High Court of Jharkhand (WP PIL no. 231 of 2025) has ruled in favour of Jyot, a religious trust from Ahmedabad, in its plea to protect the holy Sammet Shikharji (Parasnath) Hill in Jharkhand

Though declared a Wildlife Sanctuary (1984) & Eco-Sensitive Zone (2019), the site faced ongoing desecration due to tourism & mining, Political events & non-religious constructions, Alcohol & non-vegetarian consumption. A 2023 Office Memorandum from the Union of India explicitly prohibited these activities and ordered strict protection.

Key Findings by Court:
✅ Affirmed: Parasnath Hill is a sacred Jain site, not just a tourist location
❌ State Govt failed to implement prohibitions despite clear central directions
❌ Illegal activities & structures continued — enforcement only began after this PIL
❌ Attempt to blur distinction between the Hill and broader eco-sensitive zone rejected

The court directed - Strict enforcement of 2019 Notification & 2023 Office Memo, Survey of schools, mining, and all existing structures on the Hill, Deployment of additional Home Guards and ordered status reports by July 21, 2025

This verdict reinforces the constitutional protection of religious freedoms, especially for minority faith like Jainism. The Court referenced precedents from Tirumala Hills, Vaishno Devi, and Badrinath, emphasizing that prohibitions in holy places are not only lawful but necessary.

A few days ago, I conducted a 100-piece British orchestra, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to perform India’s National Anthem at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, London. This is the largest orchestra ever to record India's National Anthem and it is spectacular! The "Jaya He" at the end gave me goosebumps. Felt great as an Indian composer :-)
