Pawaya is a remote archaeological site in Madhya Pradesh near Sindh and Para river sangam. Here we find a brick Hindu temple platform, ancient inscriptions, & musical instruments artwork from about 430 AD.
1⃣ The artwork has Vina, flute, drum 1, cymbals, drum 2, and harp (clockwise from A to F). It is a part of the temple gateway lintel (Torana). @MumukshuSavitri may find this interesting, given her recent comments on Vina.
2⃣The dancer and all the musicians are women – socially active, empowered in a group performance, attesting to the artistic achievements of women in ancient Hindu society. Their hairstyle is remarkably similar to those in artwork found in Chandraketugarh (Bengal), archaeological sites near Bhubhaneswar (Odisha), etc. These musicians are all wearing jewelry, sitting on pads. The artist even shows some to be softly smiling.
3⃣This is a third part of a broken Torana lintel found near a massive brick temple platform, as we will soon see.
4⃣It is Hindu artwork because the rest of this ancient gateway lintel shows the Vamana–Trivikrama Vishnu avatara legend.
5⃣We can date the temple and artwork from the inscriptions found at this site. They are in early Brahmi and Gupta script. This suggests that this large Hindu temple site existed between 50 and 450 AD.
6⃣The Bali-Vamana legend panels here are remarkably similar to those found in Kerala temples dated a few centuries later. This is only possible with social and geographical mobility.
This artwork is currently on display in Gujari Mahal museum, Gwalior. Pawaya site is 60 km south of Gwalior, 50 km northwest of Jhansi.
