KYC Policy: Why It’s Not Just Another Formality
Let’s get one thing straight—KYC (Know Your Customer) isn’t just some boring paperwork banks make you do for fun. It’s a global necessity.
India, as a member of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), has a responsibility to protect the financial system from being misused for shady stuff like Money Laundering (ML) or Terrorist Financing (TF).
Here’s why KYC is a big deal and why you should care:
Knowing YOU Better:
KYC isn’t just about rules—it’s about understanding YOU. By knowing your financial habits and transactions, banks can manage risks better and offer you services that actually make sense.
Spotting Suspicious Transactions:
KYC isn’t just about opening accounts—it’s about monitoring them too. If something fishy pops up, like transactions that don’t match your profile, banks can flag it and report it to the Financial Intelligence Unit-India (FIU-IND).
Protecting Banks from Criminals:
Think banks are just being nosy? Nope. KYC ensures that banks don’t become playgrounds for criminals. It helps prevent shady characters from using the banking system for illegal activities like laundering dirty money or funding terrorism.
Fighting Terrorism, One Transaction at a Time:
Here’s the kicker: KYC isn’t just about money laundering. It also helps track and stop funds that could be used for terrorism. Even if the source of funds seems legit, the end-use matters.
So, the next time you’re annoyed about filling out KYC forms, remember this: it’s not just about you. It’s about keeping the financial system clean, safe, and stable—for everyone.
It’s time to set the record straight ! Keeping aside SBI lunch hour jokes that that have been doing the rounds for years, let me drop some truth bombs on you.
Contrary to popular belief, Banks don’t have a designated lunch hour where everything comes to a screeching halt. In fact, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has clearly prescribed that essential banking services must remain operational during working hours. This means that employees take turns eating lunch so that the counters—yes, the ones you’re always complaining about—stay open and running.
But here’s the catch: not every branch has the luxury of a large staff. In many smaller branches, where the total strength is just 2 or 3 employees, it’s practically impossible to keep the counters running during lunch. Why?
Because of the maker-checker concept—a system where every transaction must be verified by at least two employees. If one person is on lunch, the other can’t process transactions alone. So, in these cases, the branch has no choice but to temporarily pause counter services so the staff can eat. It’s not laziness or inefficiency—it’s just the reality of working with limited resources.
So, the next time you visit a bank and hear “It’s lunch hours,” take a moment to observe whether they’re actually bluffing or just trying to manage with limited staff.
If it’s the latter, maybe cut them some slack—they’re doing their best to keep things running with the resources they have. But if you feel something’s off, by all means, start demanding better service—just make sure you understand the context first.
What’s your take on this? Have you experienced this at your local branch? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments!
Worst food I have ever had. Although this dhaba is running on so high footfall, they are providing rotten food. Same curry for all the dishes. Mr.Gaurav don't even pay any attention to the complainant because dhaba is running on full flow...🤣🤣
While in my other post, I've shared the cost incurred in printing the 2000 Currency note & draining it in gutter: INR 1335 Crore
But hey, how can I forget the other cost which too should get booked under the head of the Chiefest of the Chief Economist of the Universe that we all treasure & approve of!!! 😇🤯😵💫😖
The cost of earlier currencies which were in Circulation:
▪️ Currency note of Rs.500/- & Rs.1000/-
▪️ Total Currency notes of 500 & 1000 which were in circulation prior to demonitization were 24% of the overall currency i.e. 22.03 Billion tenders in count.
▪️ Cost of printing currency notes of Rs.500/- ranges between Rs. 2.87/- to Rs. 3.09/- per note.
▪️ 99.30% of the currency came back to the Banks. (So almost all were genuine currency notes - Only counterfeit notes worth 43.47 Crore were siezed)
▪️ Considering an average cost of Rs.3/- per currency note the cost involved in Printing Old Rs.500/- & Rs.1000/- notes = 22,30,00,00,000 X 3 = 66,90,00,00,000
So the total cost which got drained / wasted due to the most PRUDENT decision of Chiefest of the Chief Economist of the Universe is equal to
66,90,00,00,000 + 13356733000 = 80,25,67,33,000 🚽🚽🚽
Thats a meagre, paltry and scanty:
EIGHTY THOUSAND TWENTY FIVE HUNDRED SIXTY SEVEN LAKH ODD CRORES
So the cost of one decision that the Tax Payers of this Nation Paid was 83.25 Bn Rupees!!!
Jai Ho!!! Jai Hind 🇮🇳 🙏
