The road is only wide enough for one car, so you’ve instructed the oncoming car to come through even though it’s technically your right of way. They’ve accepted your courteousness and here they come, driving towards you. Any second now they’ll give you a little wave. Or maybe they’ll just lift a finger from the steering wheel. Perhaps they’ll give you a full palm, or a simple nod, or the most confident show of appreciation: a quick flash of the lights. It doesn’t really matter, as long as they do something. They’re leaving it a bit last minute, aren’t they? At this rate they’ll be past you before they’ve even… NOTHING!!! THEY DID NOTHING!!! Didn’t even look at you! Just stared straight ahead! The audacity. Well, that’s the day ruined.
"One more thing," the patient says, right when I'm about to exit the exam room.
I used to be annoyed by it. Until one day, a patient's "one more thing" was actually "the" thing she wanted to say. But she needed to feel me out and make sure I was a safe person first. So, I sat back down and listened. Then we discussed and ran tests.
"You restored my faith in doctors." She took the bus just to tell me this today after making a full recovery. Her visit filled my heart with warmth and purpose.
If we ask people to wait for months for their appointments, then (sometimes) hours in our offices, we can hear them out for their one more thing.
Guy in gym carpark with head tilted forward in drivers seat. Suspected the worst. Hammered on his window.
He wound the window down and said...
'It's OK I'm not having a stroke, my grandson stayed over last night & I've come to the gym to sleep on the carpark for an hour'
😂
I’ve been to an awards ceremony at my son’s school today. Kids were awarded for 100% attendance, and specifically for coming into school when ill and “pushing through.” A teacher was awarded for working every evening &always being available.
This needs to stop. It’s just wrong.
It's been almost 25 years, and yet I apparently still can't eat a Jaffa cake without mentally reciting:
"Full moon. HALLF Moon. Total Eclipse!"
Please say it's not just me?
Last year, I was offered a job even after disclosing a stage IV cancer diagnosis. Highlighting the very best of workplace acceptance and culture.
But today, my husband unexpectedly had a job offer rescinded after letting the company know he may need 2 days off, a month after starting to help me recover from a possible minor surgery.
We’re both software engineers and both companies are in the healthcare space. The response he received highlights the discrimination that not only many patients face but also their caregivers.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disheartened and frustrated by their response. When faced with the choice, be company A not company B.
We’ve faced bigger hurdles and come out on top, so on we go.
In other news, if anyone is looking to hire a talented software engineer w/experience in healthcare. I know a guy 😉
Here’s a photo of us on my birthday this year. We celebrated with a hackathon building tools/apps for cancer patients. Yes, that was my actual birthday request. Things get real nerdy around here.
BREAKING: Francis Addison (72) a part-time gamekeeper of South Park, Weeting, pleaded guilty at Norwich Magistrates’ court to NINETEEN charges in connection with a multi-agency raptor persecution investigation led by Suffolk Police, including the possession of five shot Goshawks.
Previous firest school sessions & that's celebrated, I remember that too 😄 that was last week, that was Christmas time! It was obviouslya meaningful & memorable experience...& today?...
I find that our little foresters use the time, pace & space of the natural environment to share their past experiences naturally. We encourage reflection at the ends of our session too, what can we remember about our session? What was our favourite bit? Sometimes they recall...

Unable to make this session but passionate about sharing expertise & (being a Forest School Leader) about Knowledge of the World. I notice patterns in Past & Present...recalling things that have happened in the past & how we feel about these events...that's what history IS. I ...

“Well, today didn't go as we hoped but it's in the hardest of times we learn the best lessons and feel the most gratitude.
Buffy was scheduled to have her teeth cleaned and removed today but Dr. Mac had a gut feeling she needed to look at some lab work before putting her under anesthesia.
She was right:
Buffy showed signs of advanced kidney failure so anesthesia was not an option and as a family we decided that the kindest and most loving thing to do would be to let her go before she lost her will to live and stopped eating and drinking.
I wouldn't have dreamed of leaving Robbie out of this decision or not allowing him to be part of the entire process so I immediately went and picked him up from school. On the way there he told me he wanted to be the one to hold her when she went to heaven. And of course, I gave him that honor.
On the way home I told him how proud I was of him for understanding the importance of caring for old animals and helping to make sure they never ever suffer.
This is what he said...👇
(And for those of you who don't know, Robbie was adopted from the foster care system after years of severe abuse and neglect.)
"I know how it feels not to be loved or cared for and I don't want any animal of mine to ever feel that way. It's only sad for us when they go to heaven. It's a happy day for them. Thank you for being proud of me. Are you ok, Mom?"
From the mouths of babes.
(As our story is being shared more and more I feel like I need to add a little more context and also give you a deeper glimpse into the heart of my son. We adopt senior dogs. Robbie LOVES adopting senior dogs. He is sadly aware the longer a child remains in foster care the less likely they are to be adopted. He told me once "if all you guys had wanted was a baby, you would have never gotten me."
He relates to our "old people" (that's what we call our senior dogs) in much the same way.
He has also reminded me on several occasions that it doesn't matter how long you have something for how much you love it. I asked him what he meant and he said “well you've only known me for two years but you love me like it's been forever.” Yes, my son is the coolest.)”

Even when I've taught the pupils at my school to use shotguns, light fires, skin rabbits and raise a herd of frequently escaping water buffalo, I have never been reported or investigated. That all changed when I raised valid concerns about the Covid vaccine rollout to children.
