I am a pre-med major on the veterinary med track with a minor in health psychology, and I am a fourth-year student. I took nutrition science previously and enjoyed it, so I figured I might like this course. Healthy eating = balanced diet. I LOVE chicken parm!
I saw this article a few weeks ago, but it took a second read-through to fully understand it. TLDR: other factors, such as environmental factors, may increase the risk of weight gain/obesity. This is definitely something to keep in mind w/ overweight patients! @beh353#beh353
"Diet & Exercise" is not working to prevent weight gain/obesity. What do we need to look at instead? Here's some food for thought:

@augustonevv@beh353 This is a great point! It's so important to support patients in their specific nutrition goals, whether that be education, creating meal plans, or otherwise. Nutrition affects every aspect of our function, so you're definitely right with your last point!
I want to be a veterinarian, so nutrition will look different for my patients. I still plan to incorporate and promote nutritious eating for my patients! I also plan on using some of the things I've learned and applying it to my own life/sharing it w/ loved ones! #beh353@beh353
I thought this article was very interesting! This article shares how those with Parkinson's can manage some of their symptoms through diet. Diet can be so crucial to alleviating symptoms or preventing new ones from forming/worsening! @beh353#beh353
@NganNguyen1054@EmmaDArpinoRD@beh353 I thought this part of the lecture was super interesting! I've definitely met people that joke the way you've described; addiction is very serious, and it can be so insensitive to ppl with EDs or struggling w/ addiction to make jokes like that!
@EmmaDArpinoRD TY for the info you shared w/ us! I've learned a lot! I also love your work with EDs, body positivity, and intuitive eating. I hope everyone can learn a little about work like yours, and I hope that we as future healthcare leaders can discuss it! @beh353#beh353
This book seems like a great resource for parents who have neurodivergent kids. Lots of neurodivergent kids have sensory/texture issues, which limits their diets immensely. It's important to feed neurodivergent kids nutritiously and give them the tools to thrive! @beh353#beh353
Special-Needs Kids Eat Right: Strategies to Help Kids on the Autism Spectrum Focus, Learn, and Thrive, by Judy Converse #RDN#WorldAutismAwarenessDay https://t.co/2sslU0uY6s
@augustonevv@beh353 This article is a great one to recommend to parents because it's so easy to read! It's not super long and gets right to the point of what children need nutritionally.
@beh353 https://t.co/GbxqLOSsGR This isn't an article, but I wanted to share the resources from the MyPlate website. It has activities, coloring pages, and games for kids relating to MyPlate and healthy eating so kids can learn about MyPlate and nutritious eating!
https://t.co/GjxpaYCpRl This article was written and reviewed by two different nutrition profesionals. It's easy to read, and it gives recommendations to help create healthy and explorative eating habits, and a list of things to not do. @beh353#beh353
@GoddardPgodd1@beh353 I agree with your post wholeheartedly. I think practitioners need to be mindful of a patient's relationship with food, culture, genetics, etc. before passing judgement or making recommendations to overweight patients.
This post fits well with the material about fatshaming. Bottom line, stop comparing yourself to others! Many people feel insecure or less than someone else based on the way they look. As Nancy wrote, "your body is your's; it is good enough the way it is." @beh353#beh353
I've been overweight since I was a kid, so I heavily identified with this week's material. Something that stood out was that med. staff treats every fat patient the same. It's important to understand a relationship w/ food/exercise before giving a treatment plan. #beh353@beh353
This was very interesting. In summary, alcohol consumption has risen amongst women, esp. when related to stress. Women have also been the targets for alcohol ads. Everyone should limit their alcohol consumption, and women should limit to no more than one drink/day #beh353@beh353
@seata_thapa@beh353 I also found this interesting! I don't think diet soda is necessarily any healthier or unhealthier than regular soda, I thought that maybe it has to do with consumer behavior. Maybe more overweight/obese people drink diet because they feel healthier?
I didn't know that there was an association between lack of sleep and obesity. This makes sense now that I'm hearing it bc I remember learning that sleep helps our bodies regulate blood glucose and fat stores #beh353@beh353
This article has some great ideas for kids who can't or won't drink milk. I appreciate this as an adult as well, mainly bc I'm lactose intolerant and don't really like milk! There are some great ways to get the nutrients without actually having dairy products! @beh353#beh353
@Evatu23@beh353 This is definitely relatable. I'm always reaching for sweets when I'm stressed or upset. Sometimes, even if I'm just bored and I don't necessarily feel full, I might snack.
One barrier I related to was emotional responses that increase appetite and preference for unhealthy foods. I find that when I'm upset, I tend to eat unhealthy foods. I usually reach for sweets and overindulge on them when I'm feeling upset. @beh353#beh353
I love peanut butter! Nut butters are rich in fats and other micronutrients, and enjoying it with fruits adds loads of other micronutrients. I love having peanut butter with apples or bananas, or with some chocolate! #beh353@beh353
