@Mc94Molly@GingaJacob#EDU6323 Agreed- my students have been exposed to digital literacy since elementary school but I find now in middle school they still struggle with finding & evaluating sources. I feel that they need more practice w/the skill, in all subjects & at home, to really grasp it.
#EDU6323 wisely. If used correctly, tech can facilitate connection & collaboration but if not, it can have a negative impact on our ability to connect to others, live in the moment, & be grateful for the people in our lives.
#EDU6323 I was pleasantly surprised by the 2017 NMC Horizon report b/c the trends, challenges, and developments fit my vision of education in the next decade. I liked that the focus is shifting to developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-directed, active learning
#EDU6323 can help to address the issue of access. I think that addressing the achievement gap and digital equity is incredibly important. I also enjoyed the video on auto-correcting humanity. The underlying message for me was that there are pros & cons to tech & we have to use it
@LoebAnnie#EDU6323 Agreed - technology can help to both pinpoint individual strengths/interests & incorporate them into learning experiences. This allows for increased personalization, motivation, & attention, which can be difficult esp. w/larger class sizes.
#EDU6323 I really liked Wesch's video. It is a reminder that teachers shouldn't be quick to judge & make assumptions. It is important to incorporate our students' strengths & interests into their learning experiences as a way to engage & motivate them.
@Lenworth_22@Evelyn05891014@BarnardHilary#EDU6323 Agreed - checking in when students/employees seem out of it is important. It can reduce cognitive load & increase attention. If there is an issue at recess, my students need an opportunity to process their feelings before class starts or they will have trouble focusing.
@cyn_hurt @HavertyK #EDU6323 B/c Wesch realized the impact of the connection, I hope he learned from it & continues to try to make connections w/students. I agree that it can be difficult w/typical class sizes but maybe this is where tech can help. An example is teachers getting feedback via polling
@JcarrollC @Mc94Molly#EDU6323 Also like the idea of helping students build PLNs. Teachers can have them map their existing network w/classmates, family & community. PLNs can then be used as resources to solve challenges in the classroom & more connections can be added in the process.
#EDU6323 Digital technology makes these conversations, connections, & active collaboration possible with a larger & more diverse network of people.
#EDU6323 Also, teachers can learn a lot from their students. This ties into PLNs b/c Rajagopal says that conversation is "vital in innovation" & is a "key enabler of knowledge creation." Connection allows for active collaboration that contributes to learning.
@ITProgramsSCC#EDU6323 Really liked these ideas for using polls! Activating prior knowledge to build new knowledge helps to develop memory. Also identifying gaps helps teachers to provide bridging & scaffolding. This can help reduce procrastination but increase motivation
@D_Schryver#EDU6323 Agreed! As an introvert, I was often shy to raise my hand. But w/polling, all students can be participate w/o being put on the spot. As a teacher it helps me to get feedback/data from all my students that I otherwise could have missed out on.
@Lenworth_22@LoebAnnie#EDU6323 Agreed - polling can keep students engaged, and therefore motivated. Having frequent formative assessments like polling can also keep students accountable & maybe keep attendance from falling as it tended to in my larger classes in college.
#EDU6323 strategy that Miller discusses are hooks. Polling can be used as a hook to tap into students' intrinsic motivation by asking students how their experiences & interests tie into course content.
#EDU6323 I think that polling can be used to impact motivation in positive ways. Miller talks about "early & often" assessment as a motivational strategy. Polling can be used as a formative assessment & encourages active engagement. Another motivational
@HavertyK #EDU6323 AR/VR can provide training for a variety of real-world scenarios for customer service jobs while addressing common mistakes.
The ability to then learn from these mistakes can help learners to develop memory & thinking, as Miller shares.
@Mc94Molly#EDU6323 I agree that AR/VR can def. increase student engagement. Additionally, I found myself wishing that I had access to this tech b/c I think it would have helped me to visualize/understand some abstract concepts - esp. w/math & physics
