You only need to scroll Twitter or LinkedIn for a few mins to find that AI generated images are already being used by big-name institutions to help promote and communicate their work; someone is eventually going to make it reliably (and profitably) work for journal authors 🚀
It seems that Frontiers paper with the AI generated images has already been retracted, but here's a 🌶 counterpoint: what if the authors are actually trailblazing a new era of illustration in scientific publications, but their attempt was just lazy?

Today’s review marks a huge step forward for UK spinout founders 🇬🇧
It adopts almost all of the policy reform proposals I made via @spinoutfyi and have been pushing on for 2 years.
A few thoughts on why this is a big day for the ecosystem and UK science&tech below:
@ProfTomEllis@mgdurrant Several jurisdictions have ruled AI can't be an inventor on patent applications. However, I don't see why a human couldn't patent an AI-assisted invention, provided it meets the usual requirements (not a lawyer).
Congratulations Professor! Fantastic technology! How long before one of these crops up on one of those Police reality shows? I'll have my record button at the ready ;)
I'm delighted that our paper detailing a device for the instant detection of synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) on pretty much anything is now out.

We hope this is useful to decrease the flow of SCs in prisons and to identify SCs in vape liquid sold as CBD.
@aylesburytc@Talkback_UK Congratulations! As a fan of the duck house, I think it's great to see another of these projects in the local area.. keeping going, carpenters!
Here's a neat review article about energetics, photosynthesis and #synbio. It's a nice reminder of why the first lecture of my undergrad biology degree was on #thermodynamics; because "you don't get owt for nowt"! 🤔🔥https://t.co/HSn6Te58Cl
Invention isn't just about the 'aha!' moment 🚀💡 It's about hours of collaboration, brainstorming and iteration that happen behind the scenes. Group invention is where interdisciplinary teams push boundaries to find the novel and inventive #IPstrategy#Innovation
@ProfTomEllis@eszter_cs Having done a number of these short-contract postdocs early in my career, I think they should come with very deliberate, goal-orientated mentoring (technical & career) to ensure that the placement is the best-possible springboard to their next job.
Caterpillars going wild for this bush in London today. A nice protein-fibre based decoration to make things look seasonal. Perhaps it’s caterpillar Christmas tomorrow
13C Metabolic flux analysis of #Clostridium ljungdahlii illuminates its core metabolism under #mixotrophic growth. No catabolite repression by fructose on the use of CO2/H2. #Autotrophic#metabolism via Wood-Ljungdahl pathway remains dominant. Read more https://t.co/JRbtgbtkZD
So I've spent the last few weeks greatly reducing the amount of #caffeine I drink. The final piece of the puzzle has been discovering #rooibos. It's not even a substitute for black tea - it's better; earthy, smoky and yes, you can add milk 😋
The authors of a 2016 paper ignore 35 years of R&D to summarise the "current" state of the art by citing work from 1981. The 2016 paper is then cited as source of the same out-of-date statement in more recent work; making it appear current. What then, is the role of peer-review?
